The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsSince I love my cats more than I hate Walmart, I went there today.
My cats are picky creatures and they developed a deep love for Fancy Feast Savory Centers cat food. I usually have it delivered from Amazon & Chewy (they eat 2 cans/day) but they were out of stock both places. Yikes! So I went online but Pet Supplies Plus, Petsmart, and every other online pet store was out (NOT good.) I managed to find one 12-pack of it at the local Walmart. Arrgh! I think the last time I willingly went into a Walmart was in 2000. I was coerced into one by my friend when we were in Kahului, Maui in March but I didn't buy anything. Anyway, I used the "pickup" function and proceeded to drive all the way across town to Walmart. I went in and there was a very nice security guard seated by the front door. He greeted me so nicely and I picked up the cat food at the pickup station without incident. And without human contact. Big plus. As I was leaving, I saw an aging, MAGAt-like unmasked couple arguing with the security guard, and caught snippets of "freedom, "the Constitution," etc. so I lingered at the door for a few seconds to see what would happen and maybe film a viral video (just kidding.) The young, virile, very polite security guard hustled them both out the door in the nicest way possible, told them they were more than welcome to come back when they were wearing masks, then told them to have a super day.

(26,259 posts)To be honest, there was barely anyone in the store - kind of surreal. But the few customers were all masked and very aware of aisle directions and social distancing.
Same thing at the local Kroger, Meijer, Home Depot and Aldi. That might partially explain why the virus numbers in my section of the county are pretty low - lots of responsible residents. But then it is a very Blue part of the state.

(30,733 posts)I am like you. I have been to Walmart exactly three times in my entire life. The last time was about two years ago. I needed pillows and could not find what I wanted. I live in a small town. I did not want to drive fifty miles to find a store where I could buy pillows. I need to see and touch pillows, not order them from Amazon.

(7,715 posts)We did face a small negative recently: we had a fairly heavy piece of furniture delivered. However, the delivery company could not deliver inside the house because of Covid.
It took three of us to lift up a short flight of steps and then into the dining room. What would have taken the delivery folks about 10 seconds took us 30 minutes. It makes me appreciate the pre-pandemic world more and more.
Yet another thing for which I have to thank the Impeached Infector in Chief!

(8,052 posts)unless it's to pick up curbside from a real store. I'm loyal to Petco for stuff I need to get from a pet store (so no Petsmart/Chewy for me unless Petco is out of stock) but I generally stick with supermarket/Wally-World stuff (Fancy Feast household here too) for most cat and dog food just so I can buy it easily with my other groceries. I'm always afraid of what will happen when there are no brick and mortar stores left to buy things from and we're all entirely at the mercy of Amazon etc. and their shippers. My Walmart is about 90 percent mask compliant, but there's always at least a few dick-noses and defiant barefaced assholes every time I go.

(8,052 posts)I had trouble finding Fancy Feast Kitten cans, anywhere local. I had to buy Bella dog food (small-dog kibble) from Amazon once because it's the only kibble one of my dachshunds will eat, also not at any stores near me for a while.

(15,805 posts)This is where you can do all your grocery and store shopping thru their online app, schedule a delivery time and then just drive into their designated PU area. The clerk comes out with your order, loads it into your car, and there is no contact at all. You just drive on home. There's no extra fees and it's great to have a personal shopper doing all the work.
It's different than in-store pickup in that you never leave your car or get near anyone. It's been very easy and convenient, and a lifesaver, for me.
I know what you go through with a persnickety cat who will fixate on one particular product and I think, finally now she'll eat better. So I stock up with her favorite, and then it of the blue she decides nope, that stuff is shit, and tries to bury it. Then it's back to hunting for something else she will eat. I'm lucky that my other cat is such a piggy he'll scarf down everything so nothing gets wasted.

(34,374 posts)because I wanted to make my cats happy. But it will be just like them to stick their noses up at it the minute I have a big stash of it. That happened when they really, really liked the Fancy Feast Primavera in a Delicate Sauce. I got a subscribe & save then they decided they didn't like it. They'd lick the gravy off and leave the food. Great. So I have 3.5 12-packs clogging up my kitchen. I'm going to donate it to my local cat rescue. Sigh.

(13,186 posts)Unfortunately, I live in the corn and soybean fileds of southern Illinois.
Having to take a 20 or so mile drive to the walmart in the County Seat is just one of the things that come with the territory...
Along with hail, thunder snow, 100 degree August days and sheet ice on the roads every winter.
The sunrises and sunsets are lovely though

(4,242 posts)one cat who only likes Fancy Feast grilled cat food. She stared at her food, at me, at the food, at me, at the food, and then proceeded to pick at it. The other four cats aren't as picky. I've got a soft spot for those little abandoned critters. She's my only female, and lived at the dump as a kitten - her tastes sure have gotten more sophisticated in her old age.

(18,402 posts)Relatively expensive, soft pate canned non-grain food from a Wisconsin company called Fromm. And of that, she could only keep down the varieties that contained chicken, duck, or turkey (fish would make her wretch). Before that, she had always eaten dry food (always, given her snobbish ways, only the most obscure and expensive!). The local pet shop several blocks from our place started ordering her favorite varieties on a monthly basis, and always had it ready for us. We were lucky to be able to do business with a small outfit.
I too never shopped at Walmart, ever. But recently, since I have had to order provisions and supplies for my elderly mother, I have used Walmart to order medical and other supplies online when I couldn't find things elsewhere. They are always well stocked and ship quickly, for free (if I order a certain amount, I think over $35.) I've even ordered a few things for ourselves that we couldn't get elsewhere, such as nitrile mechanic's gloves most recently. Frankly, I think I prefer ordering from them more than Amazon.
