Using a chord progression written by Earth, Wind & Fire guitarist Al McKay, vocalist Maurice White and songwriter Allee Willis wrote the song over one month. Willis was initially bothered by the gibberish "ba-dee-ya" lyric White used through the song, and begged him to rewrite it: "I just said, 'What the fuck does 'ba-dee-ya' mean?' And he essentially said, 'Who the fuck cares?' I learned my greatest lesson ever in songwriting from him, which was never let the lyric get in the way of the groove."[6]

In the early days of dating my now wife, I mentioned somewhere along the line that I was a singer.
We were going somewhere & this song came on.
I cranked it up and started singing the Phillip Bailey parts.
My new girlfriend says, "Oh, you're a real singer!".
That was 42 years ago. I can see that moment in my mind like it happened an hour ago.
We've been married 40 years & she still thinks I'm a real singer.
