My Grandfather went through there in 1942, on his way to the Pacific Theater. My dads next oldest brother went through there in the mid 50s, and I went through there in the late 70s.
We had a lot of laughs with our cadences as the Marines would run by on the opposite side of the chain link fence that separated the 2 boot camps.

The issue: The 2020 National Defense Authorization Act (aka "the defense budget" requires all military training to be gender-integrated. That's a huge problem for the Marines because they still use open-bay barracks at their Recruit Depots. It will cost about as much to convert the current Recruit Depots to meet the new standard as it will to just open a new base.
They didn't ask me, but if they did I'd tell them to just build a new Recruit Depot on Camp Pendleton, Calif. There's plenty of room, and the base has recruits on it all the time already - the recruits at MCRD San Diego do all their tactical training at Pendleton because the FAA and the city are completely against recruits in training firing live ammunition next to the airport.
