Hi my name is Bob. I'm a retired sailor, born on Long Island and living in Washington State.
I've been coming to the site daily for years but never registered. The need to send some words of support to Soph changed that. I'm a proud member of the IAM.
Anyways; hi everyone.

That I signed up to make a wisecrack says nothing about mine.

(3,268 posts)My dad was a non-union mechanic at a teamster organized trucking company. He approached the teamsters and they showed little interest since that would only be 3 more jobs covered. IAM took them in and my dad helped draw up their first contract. To be a mechanic there you had to have a class 3 (tractor-trailer) license. My dad argued that the mechs had to have the same qualifications as the drivers plus the skills to repair trucks. They asked him what he wanted and he told them "We'll take whatever the teamsters get plus a nickel an hour more. That remained the standard for over 20 years.

(5,634 posts)I sailed outta Ballard on Friday morning (by land) and made landfall in KC, MO yesterday evening.
Met a tender fleet owner and had a quick interview before my trip. Hope to board a certain tender bound for AK next season.
Right now I am "in the wind" but always at home when here. (DU)
Glad you came aboard officially for Soph's sake. Good on ya.
