It's only family, so just me, both my boys and my oldest's boyfriend. I think I'm going to make chicken tortilla soup in the crockpot and a spinach salad.
The boys like cake and brownies but I wanted something a little different for the occasion.

(16,376 posts)In 2012 I had a big neighborhood-plus election night party and used a recipe for "Bahama Mama's" to make "Obama Mamma Punch" that was a hit. This year I'm going to make sparkling wine coolers.

(3,395 posts)but the Champagne is in the fridge, and I've got 20 more bottles of red if we lose.
20 bottles of red is 20 days after the election if we win, or 3 days if we lose
Laffy Kat

(4,599 posts)Not exactly on theme, but the more I thought about it, the more I want some! Mom used to make it all the time when I was a kid (the type with Dream Whip and more pudding powder in the frosting). Yum!
Its different, easy to make, and would be refreshing after a spicy soup!
Laffy Kat
(16,376 posts)I can always make it later. I think my mom used to make something like that, too, only it was called something else. There is also an "Election Cake" recipe online, but I don't think the boys would like it.

(4,599 posts)You keep the cake in the fridge, we even had a special 13x9 pan with a plastic lid for it. Probably a Tupperware special since it was late 70s/early 80s, lol! The pudding makes the cake soooo moist.
Laffy Kat
(16,376 posts)My mom used it all of the time. I make my own whipped cream now, the real stuff! Now I'm kind of craving this cake again.
I can tell I'm stressed because the only things I want to eat are carbs and sweets.

(4,599 posts)Ill leave at there are currently 3 different types in the house. Its obscene.
I cant wait for the election (and the counting) to be over and done with, and for the dust to settle.
Hope you all have a good time tomorrow night! My parents are coming over in the afternoon for a little while, but Ill be freaking out and celebrating here at DU tomorrow night.

(14,848 posts)my cousin in Denver while he was at University. His roommate took the car. Which meant motorcycle. Eeek!
We went to the bank and came home. It was a test to see how I'd do. He said 'Ah you did well, a natural". He explained some first time riders grab on to him too tight, too scared to say a word, or not leaning into the turn.
I rode a bike years earlier, I think that's why I did that.
Anyway we visited Red Rocks, ?Golden (saw the Opera House!), and then while trying to find Coor's ?Red Ryder bike race we went up! A lake (forgot the name) 10,000 ft up where we stopped. The Continental Divide Mountains with July snow still glistening on them on the clear distance. Swoon! An unroaded valley of ?hundreds, ?thousands of pine trees. Wooo.
Later in the week after going to South Dakota visited Colorado Springs and took a tour to Garden of The God's, and the Air Force Academy.

I'll give you tips if you get to NYC. 🙂

(16,376 posts)It is beautiful here. You have a great state, too. I took my two sons to NYC for my youngest's graduation gift. We had a blast. I hadn't been in years and years and I think everyone needs to experience NYC.

If I think they are visitors I ask if this is their first, or return visit. Welcome their first time, or their return.
I've had plenty of helpful people across the country when I was the visitor. 👍

(35,644 posts)do a search under "tres leches cake easy recipe".
In the speech class I taught, the students did what was known as a "process speech," meaning they had to give a speech explaining the procedure for doing something. One student did the tres leches cake and brought an entire cake in so everyone could have some. One of the most popular speeches ever!
When the RG and I used to go to the Portuguese restaurants in the Ironbound, before the pandemic, we would often order this for dessert. It's wonderful with coffee.

(63,221 posts)Very light, but rich and flavorful. If they like chocolate, it is the perfect dessert.
Laffy Kat
(16,376 posts)I've never made it before.
smirkymonkey
(63,221 posts)Just whipped egg whites and you mix in a custard of chocolate, egg yolks , sugar, vanilla, etc. Some recipes are more complicated and call for cream, but I like it without cream. It's very simple, light, but delicious. You can add a little liquour like a brandy or Chambord or something like that to make it more exotic, but it's good either way .
Laffy Kat
(16,376 posts)I might do this over the weekend.

Mine is made with heavy cream and egg yolks...but since I'm using Splenda it might not be as luxurious.

(118,577 posts)Mix in the flavours you want like dried chopped mango or the rind and juice of lemons and limes (to taste). Put back in the freezer and it will refreeze given a few hours. Serve in chocolate cups.
Laffy Kat
(16,376 posts)Sounds elegant and easy.

(118,577 posts)too much rind. It is more than one each lemon and lime but not more than two. Do it gingerly if you have a smaller tub of frozen yogurt.
