My favorite example is the character Joe Turner in Three Days of the Condor has a job working for the CIA as a researcher reading books and articles looking for leaks and codes and anything resembling actual CIA operations.

James Grady wrote the book on which the movie is based.

According to James Grady in the anniversary edition of "6 Days of the Condor," the movie adaptation spawned similar offices to the one where Redford's character worked, first by the KGB (who assumed the US already had such research offices) and then, after it proved successful for the Soviets, by the CIA.
