(5,518 posts)Is realizing how young the American Eurocentric culture is.
I grew up near St Augustine and visited what is billed as the "oldest" fort in the US. It was how I framed history as an American.
Then I went to London and the Tower of London is a multi-story fort that is 600 years older. Totally opened my mind. And that didn't even step outside my comfort zone of being anglo-centric considering historic structures in other cultures.
We are the new kids on the block in many ways.
