Before his face was on wanted posters, before the police were on his tail, before he became the most elusive fugitive in the history of Chevy Chase Village, Nerds licked a little boy’s face.

The 1-year-old Chesapeake retriever was living at a foster home in Maryland after being rescued from a shelter in Mississippi. The rescue organization named him after the fruity candy, posted his picture on the Internet and waded through the flood of applications from potential dog parents looking for a pup in a pandemic.
