I moved up from Medford a week ago and am now running from Kent, WA (Near SeaTac Airport) down to Salem, OR, getting underway around 4 AM which gets me across the Columbia and through Portland between 6 and 7.
I could tell the colors were going to be really pretty and as I crossed the Willamette River and climbed up the ridge, the sunrise was lighting Mt. Hood from behind in a most spectacular way.
Im not too happy with the foreground, but this was the first safe spot to stop after I got away from Downtown
Zoomed in on Mt.Hood a bit
I took a ride out to the coast last Monday (my only day off) and then drove up into the Olympic National Forest. This is the stone jetty at the tip of the peninsula that the town of Ocean Shores, WA is located, at the inlet to Grays Harbor. The next bit of land due west is Sakhalin Island, about 4100 miles away.

(25,839 posts)My son used to live in Portland. I visited him a couple of times, and in a different reality I would also live there. Perhaps in some alternate future I will be able to do so.

(14,848 posts)I'm often surprised to see really red Sunrises
I see more pinkish ones.
Mt Rainier looks gorgeous in photos. What part of which range is this in Oregon?
Lucky for me I've seen 2 big mountain ranges.
NYS's Adirondacks.
(Not as big Western ranges, they are older so more weathered down)
Colorado - The Rockies - North west of Denver.
(my cousin took me up on a motorcycle (!) to Echo Lake: 10,000+ ft; looking SW Mt Evans w snow, looking NW further away snow capped mountains of The Continental Divide! [near swoon] So magical! ).
And living with n NYC I can hop on a subway (about 1 1/2 maybe less practically going from the northern end to the southern end of Bronx down to Southern Brooklyn) and go visit the beach in Brooklyn!

(8,954 posts)Portland area sure beats Medford IMO. Not that Medford and southern Oregon aren't glorious in their own right. However, I think you scored a significant upgrade with the move!

(24,365 posts)In fact, thats what made me start looking for a spot to pull over!
Just before I-5 turns to the west into the bridge over the Willamette, I noticed the mountain had indeed cast a shadow on the clouds to the west. However the freeway from the river to this spot has narrow breakdown lanes or the view to the east is blocked by various things, buildings, hills, trees, etc.
This is the spot where I stopped;

Thats almost 20 miles south of the river crossing near downtown! The breakdown lane is really wide there, in front of the rest area, but by the time I got there, I was south of the point where I could see the shadow, and the colors were just about at their peak!

(24,365 posts)This part of the country has some spectacular scenery.
I have wanted to get a shot of Mt. St Helens and Adams, but there are only a few spots on I-5 where they can be seen in their entirety and I am always rushing to finish my trip when I pass those spots.
Same with Ranier. I can only see it when I return back up here to Kent, but making a detour to a good spot to take a pic is just not something I can do easily with a semi, not to mention the sun lighting up the Mountains west side doesnt get real good till late in the afternoon, and I am hitting the rack at 6 PM to get up at 2 AM.

(6,836 posts)who just went into home hospice care. He owns a political blog, and I am one of four readers selected by him to inherit it. It is painful for him to sit at the computer for any length of time, but he is managing to post a little every day. I shall include the zoomed one in my comment tomorrow, with a link to this post. I know he will see and appreciate it, even if he doesn't have the energy to say much. Thank you for posting it.

(6,836 posts)I thought you might feel that way.
He is as comfortable as they can make him. Unfortunately, that is not the same as pain free.
I know he saw it ... but didn't have the energy to mention it.

(24,365 posts)As I recall, anyway. The days are becoming a blur, frankly. This schedule has me turned upside down!
Heres one from Yesterday, which was rainy and foggy all the way down and back.
I called this Mt. Hood wearing a hat as the Columbia River gives an opinion;
A wider view;
Those where taken on the bridge over the Columbia on I-205 as I was leaving the new Portland Processing Center
BTW, there is no color alteration there. Taken about 9 or 9:15 in the morning.
