Just hit me that I've clocked 20 years of DU by now and feeling not only old, but a bit maudlin.
So curious who has shared this journey with me - the ups and the downs.
On Edit: this is not elitist - I so welcome everyone who has found their way here. So grateful to see how vibrant the community has become and changes and improves day by day.

(112,426 posts)that. I see your date is actually 9/11/01. What a day to have joined. And how many extraordinary days this amazing family has shared in that time.
Be safe and well.

(26,397 posts)I had a momentary piece of lucidity where I knew Bush was gonna f* this up - which he did - and that he became far more dangerous as a change agent. Wanted to make sure I became more active and connected.
For historical records - I think I started reading within the first week of the founding, but felt no need to contribute.

(26,397 posts)To be honest, it was truly a very brave thing they did. This was definitely sticking a finger in the eye of what was originally becoming a RW echo-chamber in the blogosphere on the Internet.

(16,368 posts)The date on my profile says I was here at the inception. I actually joined that November, though I started reading shortly after 9/11. But I did witness the DU origin banner carried by early and Skinner at Shrubs inauguration on my tv if that counts.
Lithos
(26,397 posts)I remember that banner!
Skinner and EarlG were babies at that time

I didn't post that much during Obama years, just cause things seemed pretty okay ... but ... yeah.

(26,397 posts)You definitely caught the vibe which was back in the Shrub years. Hate to compare it a fine wine - it was definitely a different "taste" than the super sweet reality of Obama and the rotgut harshness of Trump.

But, to your point - yeah - such a ride!

(152,964 posts)I lurked for a couple of months, then joined DU the month before the events of 9/11....I was sickened by the appointment of that piece of SHIT Dubya to the presidency and wanted to hear from others who felt the same; yes INDEED.

(15,782 posts)First couple years were on dialup. My oh my.
I get a huge kick out of sharing stuff from DU, some folks have remarked that they heard something on the news two or three days after they heard it from me. And it really is amazing that DUers are frequently both first and most accurate.

(18,581 posts)Still, we share some memories. Remember when so many went gaga over Napoleon Dynamite and "Pedro for president"?
Or when half of DU was so sure Dennis Kucinich would be president they became intolerant of anyone who denied it? I kept my head low during that revolution, a talent that would become useful again in 2008.
Bob Boudalang? (stop saying that!) RIP

(202,970 posts)My previous profile used to say "Before July 6, 2003." That was the day we moved to DU.2 and you were one of the very first to join there. We've seen so many changes to DU since then, all of them user-friendly improvements to the site.

(184 posts)I was on DU since 2001 but computer died and I could not have reset my PW because he the company I had my e-mail through went out of business. It was a pain finding and resetting my online accounts so I just lurked for a long time until I decided to re join. That I taught me many lessons like update info. and use a password manager etc.
