(16,376 posts)I rescued my first deaf dog in 1999, a heeler/Aussie mix. She was so intelligent that training her was effortless. She eventually learned about thirty signs, although we didn't need to use that many. She was a wonderful pet and lived to be thirteen. My current deaf rescue is a Catahoula mix. She is my soul mate. She probably knows around fifteen signs but the truth is, I've stopped using sign with her because I simply don't need to; she reads my body language so well she knows what I want her to do before I do. She is close to thirteen now and is still doing terrific even with her controlled Addison's. I can't even think about losing her. She is my heart.
Please consider adopting/rescuing a deaf dog. They are usually the first ones euthanized at kill shelters and it is so unfair. For more information contact: https://www.spiritofdeafdogs.org/
