touched? I bought a big thing of pickled eggs. I guess i pictured myself living in my dark basement apartment eating the last of my pickled eggs. I've never eaten them before. Do they go bad? Does botulism feel bad? Should i cut the pickled eggs into slices and rest them on my facial wrinkles? What else can I use them for?

(34,195 posts)Although the news said the water supply should not be affected a friend of mine talked to me into stocking up on water.
I stopped after getting about 8 gallons from the grocery.
I used one gallon for something and still have 7 gallons of water sitting in the corner of my kitchen.
I'll be moving later this year and don't plan to take the water with me.

However, I seem to be able to find other things in glass jars, so I wonder what's up with them. I am desperate for them. They are the only pickles/pickle juice I will buy. Nothing else comes close.

(5,477 posts)We used what we had in the house, and made periodic shopping forays to one of our local Costcos. We usually try to keep the pantry and freezer fairly well-stocked (since we live in an area subject to earthquakes and volcanoes, and try to stay prepared), and still had enough TP and cleaning supplies from our normal shopping that we never felt lacking for anything. Before we found a bottle of hand sanitizer (in the handy 1-liter size) we realized we had a large bottle and a tiny one of Purell that we'd never used - they were still sealed and sitting on a shelf. Now I fill the pocket-sized bottle from the larger pump bottle, and refill *that* one from the liter bottle as needed.
Overall (other than not going out except for necessary trips) we didn't change our lives in a drastic fashion.

(55,007 posts)usually have at least a months worth of supplies anyway. last spring we actually did get low on paper towels and toilet paper because of the hoarding. people were driving 50 miles from Tucson to our nearby little town to get it all. so my normal stash dwindled and then we got into the rationing period where you could only buy one package at time - and we don't shop every damn day or even every week so we got kind of low.

But canned milk does not taste good. Normally I only use it in cooking, e.g. making pumpkin pies.
So I started venturing out to stores I considered safe to go to, e.g. a grocery store that enforces distancing and masks. The cans are still taking up room in my cupboard. I need to check the dates on them. If still good, I will donate them to a food bank.

I'm mostly just teasing you, pickled eggs are dive bar snacks, they aren't even food. If it wasn't so late I would search for a MFM post about them, I am sure he must have written about them. they are fart producing wonders and I know he must have had a story!

(118,600 posts)there was some hardyness that comes with them that would steel me for when a newly dystopian Ottawa was empty and dark and tumble weeds started rolling by.
How MFM would have kept us laughing with a whole new things to riff on: lockdowns, vaccines, Trump. Oh he would have been so great at Trump quips. He used to tease me so gently - he knew us all and that made him special. My only live experience with someone who really could have been a professional comedian. And here he was: doing it out of the goodness of his heart. And it is not easy. Most likely profession of people to have suicidal ideation is cartoonists. All that pressure to produce every day and do it alone. MFM came up with 5 jokes a day, which is more. And a had bad heart. He gave his all. It lifted me up in very hard times. I don't blame MFM for getting frustrated for being taken for granted. So nice he is not forgotten on the DU and will live on forever here and through you Kali.

(969 posts)There was a recipe that involved a gallon jar of pickled beets, also.
It took another gallon jar to do:
Take half the picked eggs out of the egg jar and put them in the empty jar, along with all the liquid from the eggs.
Take half the picked beets from that jar, and pour all the liquid into the original pickled egg jar.
Then put the eggs and their picking liquid into the jar with the remaining beets. Refrigerate both jars for 8 weeks at least.
The eggs will be dyed by the beets and their juice.
I'd do it about now, and serve sliced in half at a Halloween party as Alien Eyeballs.
But I've been described as "a sick and twisted individual", YMMV.

(36,294 posts)The only items I added when I first read of about the virus outbreak in China and there were only a few confirmed cases in the US was face masks and hand sanitizer. 8 fl. oz bottles of hand sanitizer were on sale at the local Dollar General for $.50 a bottle. I don't remember what I paid for the surgical masks but I think it was around $8 for a box of 50.

(14,274 posts)All my low sodium snacks come from Trader Joe's. I have not found anything that is comparable in quality and sodium content (which I watch religiously). The nearest Trader Joe's is around 60 miles from where we live and I promised my wife I would not go into a store until we were both fully vaccinated.
I was desperate. So I finally said, dammit and bought an air popper and a big jar of popcorn. I decided I would have to settle for choking down flavorless air popped corn. Then I found a low sodium pretzel through Walmart.com that was acceptable. And then my daughter began shipping me supplies from the Trader Joe's she lives by.
Flash forward one year later - I am fully vaccinated so yesterday I went to Trader Joe's and stocked up for the next pandemic. And the popcorn popper is unopened.

We bought a Giant bag of brown rice at the local Indian market. It is in the bottom of our freezer. I really need to get it out and fill up a canister with some of it.
