we've kept a tight bubble this past year. Two of us are fully vaccinated while my son has one more shot to go. So we are still being cautious.
Next door neighbor had what she described as a "small graduation party" drop-in for their son. It was supposed to be family and just a few neighbors. Even in non-pandemic times, we are the type of people who will drop in for a bit, leave a gift and then go. They have a gorgeous backyard so we assumed it would be outside.
The weather was perfect and indeed people gathered outside where there was wine and drinks. But there were way more people than we expected. Kids, a few babies, and a ton of out-of-town guests who had flown in from all over the country. (!)
Ok, we chatted here and there and then we met a lady we shall call Florida Woman. Even though we tried going for small talk, she somehow inserted Fake News, Vaccine Nuts, and Pipeline Shutdown Denial into the conversation. We used getting some food as an excuse to get away from her. We'd been there at least an hour.
The food was all inside the house. We went in and there were more people crammed in there! And it's not a big house at all. I never even saw the table with the food. My husband and I looked at each other and he says you wanna go? I'm like yep! So we said a quick goodbye to the honoree and host and dashed out the door. I know the host was a bit surprised because she had really talked up the food before this but we were just so uncomfortable in a crowd this big. For me, partially about Covid but I don't want other crap either.
I guess I'm in the paranoid group.

(17,615 posts)..we met their dtr when she was 3 years old so shes like our dtr too. However..the Universe saved our butts by the Vet rescheduling my dogs knee surgery for the day of the wedding!! Plus the surgery was 3 hours away. We RSVP'd that, sadly, we are unable to attend because of the dogs surgery. We had hesitated anyway because we know all their friends are mostly trumpers (IF they vote at all)....and our neighbors have told us they wont get shots.
I just checked the wedding photos and there wasnt one mask amongst them. The wedding was outdoors but there was a huge gathering in their barn with food dancing etc.
If the dogs surgery hadnt been rescheduled we were going to mask up...watch the wedding from a distance and leave. In spite of everything ( such as the 30 mph winds that blew things around)..my neighbors daughter was a very beautiful bride.
