I'm back and I bet nobody missed me. I can explain.

A flood in my basement resulted in knocking out my computer and downstairs TV. My hot water heater broke, causing the flood and lost power to the computer and tv. Now we are restored and basically got a better grounding system, a new hot water heater, new TV and new computer. Mercifully, my book in progress was saved on a flash drive by my computer guy the day before the flood (he was helping me put my book into Google docs for my book designer, who happens to be my daughter). Our insurance company came through for "most" of it but said the hot water heater was too old (19 years) and we shudda replaced it a while back. That's nice. We're supposed to have that info locked in our brains somehow?

We are not poor and can afford all this but we're old so I get it. Shudda, coulda, woulda.

For the water heater and all other appliances and systems in your home (plumbing, electrical, HVAC etc), consider getting a home warranty. That would almost assuredly cover a replacement water heater. Plus you get relatively cheap service charges to fix covered items.

Won't help for the last episode, but perhaps for future breakdowns that your home insurance won't cover.

A few years back my daughters were constantly at me to get into assisted living. When Covid hit those places real hard I said "Aren't you glad we didn't go into Assisted Living now?"

MY 'assisted living' will be in daughter's house (near here,) and if we want to renew the lease in 3 years, we will!

and down the stairs quite well. Walkers on both floors. He gets out for pizza and a beer once a week with his buddies. We don't drink at home any more so he needs his time away. Then the pandemic hit and we were safe at home. We got our two Pfizer vaccines in the month of February. Just about every public place has a mask requirement which I don't mind, even tho I could go without it.

replacement time frame? I vaguely recall hearing some TV show say that water heaters last 10 years, but I don't know if that's really true or if it is even an industry standard or such.

Do have an expected life. I think when new they tell you in the paper work. Use Google calendar and set in a date about ten years from now. Depending on the type of heater it is a good idea to flush buildup of scale from the tank. Keeps efficiency up.. Now fun having a bad water heater ad they can be messy.
