(184 posts)This window was commissioned by a widow in honor of her husband. She paid for it and intended for it to be in the church. To sell it shows complete disregard for the person who paid for it and the man it was intended to honor.
mopinko
(69,982 posts)that happens a lot.
they sold it w the stated promise that it would be restored. that isnt a job for amateurs.
ornotna
(10,791 posts)It's been fully restored and more people will get to see it, and more people will know who had it made and why.

(58,347 posts)Also, the value of the window might very well have gotten to the point that the church couldn't afford to insure it anymore; and as the article states, they definitely couldn't afford to clean it up.
I've spent a lot of time in churches, and I can tell you that gifts are often made that are good-intentioned but they are made with no provision for the future and become terrible burdens on later congregations.

(11,558 posts)You should be proud of being an alum of such an institution!
Thank you for the big dose of beauty!!! People are generally less aware of Chicago's very real contributions to art and refinement. Being the birthplace of gospel music surprised me, for example.
mopinko
(69,982 posts)tho the closer you get to some things, the uglier they get.
like how the founders got rich pumping up the value of their own collections.
but it is a place like none other. taking a shortcut through the museum on the way to class was unforgettable.
full of amazing people, both faculty and students.

(11,558 posts)Slightly subtle distinction here, but I was suggesting that you feel proud of it in a full-throated, totally enthusiastic way. Which I'm sure you do.

Historic NY
(37,449 posts)a lot of artists of all different mediums, from murals, to furniture, landscape, paintings, all sort of hand things for each other. A couple of mansions and a church has several examples of Tiffany. Most of the residents here a clueless, one location just sold for 1.12 mil.

(50,236 posts)to go into the sanctuary and sit by myself and look at it. Sadly, they sold it since the church couldn't afford to keep the building up. It wasn't as spectacular as this window, though. This could be one of Tiffany's best.
