If you are unfamiliar with it, this is the movie version of the Lin Manuel Miranda hit musical that he wrote and starred in before Hamilton.
It is a glorious explosion of latinx culture with music and dancing. What felt kind of constrained on the stage bursts out into the real streets of Washington Heights. It is a lot of fun.
It is running on HBO Max this month as well as the theaters. It is such a spectacle, it is one of those movies that is worth the big screen.

My whole family loved it.

(13,417 posts)My main issue with the film is that it was too long and it really dragged during the second half. The performances are good and so are the songs (even if they arent too memorable). The story and characters are great and so is the choreography.

(17,862 posts)The music isn't quite to our taste. Never got into rap. When they sang more traditionally, I enjoyed it a bit more.
It is nice to watch a movie with a positive outlook. That is the kind of movie that my wife likes.

(145,130 posts)My son, my youngest child and I saw In the Heights. My middle child and her husband saw this movie earlier today in Austin. My youngest had seen the play in London and liked the film a bit better. It was nice getting out. It has been almost two years since I have seen a movie. We were at the Alamo Drafthouse that was largely empty. The local Regal that we passed on the way also had a largely empty parking lot

(63,903 posts)The sequence with Abuela was moving and extraordinary: who gives old people big movie sequences in such length?
I had no idea he conceived and wrote this before "Hamilton."
Thanks for the review. I look forward to reading it and pondering this work of art for some time...
