I got curious about the small image in the lower left corner of each note, sorta looked like someone sitting in a wheelchair which I found curious, so I downloaded the pic and zoomed in.
Looks more like some ruler with a lance in the left hand, and an olive branch in the right, and what appeared to be a wheel, is actually a shield . . . .
Anyhoo - I'd be doing a lot more research before I'd cash them in for face value,

(4,175 posts)I have an envelope with all the money and weird letters , coins, etc I find. When you pick up litter 240 days a year, you're gonna get some doozies!

(14,093 posts)and if you still had "old" pounds you had to take them directly to the Bank of England to cash them in. Maybe some of our DUers across the pond can elucidate.

(39,343 posts)Its been exactly two years since my last trip. It was the year it was hot as balls and yellow vest types were burning a 5 Guys burger in a riot down the street from the Arc de Triomph

(14,853 posts)I still have some Deutsche Mark coins from a trip to Germany with my parents in the early 80's.
Both depressing and funny story:
One of my sister's friends traveled to New Zealand in the early 70's, and she gave me some of the coins from there. I later showed them to some of my 1st grade classmates during recess at school, explaining to them that they were coins from another country, and one of the nosey teachers (who I saw at the elementary school but she was never my teacher) asked to see them. Then the IDIOT confiscated them, telling me to stop telling lies because it wasn't real money! I protested that it was real money from another country, New Zealand, but she repeated the accusation while saying I could have them returned at the end of the school year. I never bothered.
Such an incredible example of ignorance from a teacher has stuck with me ever since. I was only a 1st grader, but I was somehow more aware of the ways of the world than her! I even knew the location of that country on a globe, which I doubt that moron teacher could do.
I still remember the coin with the Kiwi bird on one side of it, with the queen and the name of the country on the other side. It was my favorite at that age. Don't recall the other couple coins that she took.
Never told my parents or anyone else about it until years later. I'd learned very early to never bring up any troubles with school because it might make matters worse for me.

(2,522 posts)It is very much appreciated. They are left over from my trip to the UK in the late 70s.
For reference, these notes were in circulation from the early 1970s through about 1991 or so. That fiver would have got you the better part of 20 pints in a pub in 1975, might get you two now.
Will spring for a pint for you the next time I am through Central Illinois!
