But back in the mid 1980s I lived in Phoenix, and my toddler was in pre-school at the Jewish Community Center. At the time, the Phoenix Suns practiced there. Sometimes I'd help walk the three year olds into the gymnasium, and past the giant young men who played for the Suns. It was a bit hilarious, in my opinion, the vast size difference.

Oh, and the Suns players were always wonderful. Some of them sent their own young children to the pre-school there. When my son was three, a four-year old son of one of the Suns was in his class, and when the class picture was taken, he was right next to my son. Well, my son in the photograph has a somewhat vacant-eyed expression, the kind that might make you wonder about his ultimate intellectual capabilities. The young son of the Suns player was older, focused, and completely with the program. Every so often I look at the picture and get a laugh.

I am sure the other kid has grown up to be wonderful. My son is MY Son The Astronomer, whom I often reference here.

I will say that my brief encounters with the players back then was always cordial. I think many of them were a bit bemused by the whole Jewish Community Center thing, since (just going out on a limb here) none of them were Jewish. But there was plenty of mutual respect, and I'm grateful for the encounters.

And I still get a laugh at the picture of my son's preschool class.

were stretching their legs... quite a long ways to the chairs on the other side in the waiting area.

Turns out it was a college basketball team and they were flying economy to their game. The one sitting in front of me on the plane was over 7 feet tall and there was just no way for him to sit comfortably. Knees in the aisle, but he had to keep moving. They were a very polite bunch and didn't complain but it made me realize that they really needed more room.

find the leg room on planes to be tight. I have long felt sympathy for normal sized people, let alone tall ones.
