it's always darkest before the dawn.

umm, actually, no.
it's darkest at the midpoint between dusk and dawn.
the sun does not pop up in the midst of the midnight sky.

so why the hell is this an accepted cliche?
i just heard someone say this on the rachel, and i just cant.

As in "head over heels in love, " which is a perfectly normal position for a human to assume. What is meant is "heels over head, " meaning upside down, but if you said it, you'd attract confused stares.
