The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI had an extended visit by Skittish and the kittens, this afternoon.
Another big step - instead of running away when they saw me, the kittens sat by the fence while I brought out the food. I stood in the screened in porch and they all saw me but, again, didn't run away. Instead they ate and played. And played. And played. As usual, Skittish kept track of where I was, but at one point she started doing belly up rollies. The funniest part was Mittens walking really close to the porch, and then 'checking me out' for the longest time. Spooky Jr took the opportunity to sharpen claws on the maple tree. (I wish I could get better pics.) This totally made my day.

(26,260 posts)Scooter is the solid gray. It was too dark for any photos, unfortunately, but the cuteness almost caused me to melt.

(8,201 posts)I wasn't able to catch them, spay them and bring them inside until one was about five months old and the other was several years old. They took longer to tame than kittens do, but the one who was five months old is a cuddly love now, and the other is getting there. She doesn't sit on the couch with us, but she bumps up against us and asks to be pet. I started taming them outside by sitting closer and closer to the food bowl while they ate.

(5,067 posts)The vet said she was too far along to perform an abortion/spay. By keeping her in the garage we have made peace with each other and I will be able to get the kittens used to humans and hopefully find homes for them. My other 3 cats hiss and spit and growl every time they see "Sassy" so I might have to rehome the mother too.
Good luck in making them friendly. It took a while but my son managed to do that with a cat and 3 half grown kittens he built a shelter for in his backyard. He managed to catch them all in a humane trap and took them to a vet that spayed and neutered all of them. The mother and one of the kittens got so tame they eventually moved into his house.

(9,965 posts)who I adopted via our shelter's "barn cat" program. They are definitely outdoor kitties (I can't have an indoor cat due to spousal allergies) who have shelter and they are still somewhat skittish, although I can pet them when feeding time comes around. The smaller, Winnie, is a one-eyed tortie who caught my eye when I was cleaning. She would come out and watch me, and responded to treats and even let me pet her once or twice. She was paired in the "barn cat" program with Vicky, a brown tabby with an immensely fluffy tail who is twice her size but who Winnie bosses around (that "tortietude is not a myth!). They lived in a habitation crate at my house for the first month while getting used to the place, then I opened the door but continued to feed them in it for another week. After that, the crate went back to the shelter but they were fed in the same place. Still are. And we haven't had a mouse problem since, although we never see the evidence. They do leave us the occasional deceased vole though, just to remind us they're on the job. (Apparently voles don't taste good.) Somebody got a squirrel once. And Vicky nailed a starling, although they generally leave the birds alone.
