The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsMy cat is a genius. I used the word "Tuna" for the first time in 6 months
and Captain Hughey knew right away to jump on the counter..... well maybe it took several tries. But he is brilliant I tell you. I also tell him "There. is. a. fly. on. your. head." buzz buzz buzz buzz buzz buzz buzz in Kamala Harris' voice and i buzz his head with my fingers. He likes that alot. What words does your cat know?

Such a symbiotic relationship if he is hungry. Other than that he totally ignores me.

(210 posts)...they only know the sounds of the treat drawer or can of food being opened.
However, I am expected to know the difference between the varying meows ie: "Where are you?", "Wake up and feed me," "Get that bug off the ceiling for me," "Pet me," "Bored now," etc...

When I say brush she immediately jumps up on the sofa for a brush. When I say let's have a hug, she immediately jumps OFF the sofa and away from my reach.

No-no
Please don't do that.
Nighty-night. (Jumps in bed when she hears that)
Here (with gestures)
OK (meaning yes)
It's all right (as in Relax, don't worry.)
Play, Wanna play?
Ouch, don't hurt me (When she plays too roughly)
Get down
Plus the names of the following toys:
Ball (fuzzy ball attached to a stretchy cord)
Crinkle (rolled up, tightly packed foil ball)
Bubbles (the kind with a wand)
Red light (laser light)
Chickie (small, wind up chicken)
She seems to be wired for language. I never had any other cat who learned words so well.

(21,428 posts)picks up the meaning if I put together two words that she knows, with gestures
Example: Her name is Ember. When she was curled up on a chair that I wanted to sit on, I pointed to her, said her name, and then tapped her cat tree. "Ember here." Then I pointed to myself, said my name, and tapped the chair she was curled up on. "Wnylib here." I repeated the words and gestures a couple times. She got off the chair and leaped onto the cat tree.
Edit to add: Sometimes I just say, "Wnylib here," and tap the chair she is on. She gets down.

(23,649 posts)she just won't give me the satisfaction of letting me know what she knows. lol
wnylib
(21,428 posts)most cats. Mine definitely knows what "get down" means, but will test me sometimes on whether I will enforce it. She likes to push the envelope in order to maintain her feline independence.
She does understand that the sounds from my mouth mean something. When I speak to her, she looks attentively at me. It freaks her out if I hum. I think it's because I am making sounds without moving my lips. She is also fascinated by whistling. The stranger the whistle sound, the more intrigued she is by it. So she is learning to come to me when I whistle, out of curiosity.
I know that she is distinguishing the word sounds because I keep her treats in a different place from her regular food. If I say "treat" she stands by the fridge. If I say "hungry" she goes to the cupboard where her food is kept.
I think that cats, dogs, and other animals are able to understand some degree of human language because they have their own species sounds that they use for communication among themselves. When they bond with a human, they transfer that comprehension capacity across species. Just a speculation of mine since I don't know of any studies on that. But, it works that way with people. We are "wired" for language. So, we pay attention to the different types of dog barks, cat meows, and body language to figure out what our animals are "saying" or expressing. So why wouldn't animals do that with us, especially other mammals that are social creatures like us? Some species and individuals within species do it better than others.

Trueblue1968
(17,205 posts)a little kitten and hubby brought him home. Sally had a kitty cold and we took him to the vet to get checked out and get medicine for his upper respiratory sickness. while at the vet, we asked the vet the sex of the kitten. Vet looked at Sally and said HE WAS A GIRL. That was fine with me because we were going to keep the kitty. we gave the kitty medicine and he got better. took kitty for check up to make sure he was cured. We asked the vet (( who was a different doctor from the first doctor )) if Sally was a girl and the lady vet said YES, THE KITTEN WAS A GIRL.
Sally got along with our other 4 cats and he was really smart.... he quickly knew his name. one morning a couple weeks later i saw SALLY on the bed giving himself a bath..... Sally was licking his "Oscar Meyer" and WE THEN REALIZED THE VETS WERE WRONG.
SALLY WAS A BOY. Since he already knew his name was -- SALLY -- we kept it.
So he is our Sally Man Der boy.... Sally is now 8 years old. He likes to go for walks wearing his harness.
