Kaavan has undergone a lot of changes in the last 9 months

"Kaavan has undergone a lot of changes in the last 9 months, flying from Pakistan to an enriched life at Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary. The objective has always been autonomy and freedom.

Six days ago he was finally granted that, and he has been taking that all in slowly, exploring tentatively at first, following perimeters and tender grassy areas, foraging for his own food rather than being hand fed. This is all so new to him. He seemed not sure initially, but these few days alone with himself in his own forest has got him to thinking.

I believe he knows that this is what his life should always have been like, recovering distant memories, a time when he roamed free with his mother and the herd until he was stolen away from that life at such a tender age to become a mostly solitary exhibit in a foreign land, deprived of his freedom and ability to forage, deprived of the deep social bonds and duties typical of his kind, deprived of the safety of the herd.

Kaavan is remembering what his life should always have looked like; to feel safe and to find a quiet spot mid morning, to lie down and fall asleep to the peaceful sounds of the forest, to feel the wind ripple the tall grasses against his skin, to eat whenever and as he chooses, picking from a mixed browse at any moment. It's a lot for anyone to absorb, having been denied that experience virtually one's whole life.

Emotions are stirred, from being overwhelmed and content to being angry at the fact that his life was stolen from him, that his birthright was denied him, that for 35 years he remained imprisoned and restrained, wrongfully accused.

We are in debt to the millions of animals around the world who remain imprisoned and on display, 'wrongfully accused', denied every experience of what their true nature is seeking, detained for life until an unnatural and early death shall take them. It is time to make amends. It is time to Empty the Cages. It is time to say No to the liars and profiteers who exploit the Beauty of the natural world.

Kaavan has his Kingdom now. He still has a long life ahead of him, with new friends in the making. His life is blessed, and many hands have joined together to grant him freedom. There are too many captive elephants leading desperate lives. The work ahead is daunting. But let us remember Kaavan's energy of indignation today to propel our task to free all captives." ~ Darrick Thomson

I don't think I've ever heard Kaavan trumpet before. This is awesome.
