For me:
Hellmann's mayonnaise
Jif peanut butter (I'm a choosy mother)
Scott toilet paper (the non-fluffy kind which is supposed to be good for septic tanks)
Cascade Platinum dishwasher detergent (my stepdad got me hooked)
Dawn dish soap
Lea & Perrins worcestershire sauce
Mission flour tortillas
Kingsford charcoal
Maxwell House half caffeine coffee
Aveda hair styling products
Now back to my online shopping

(25,914 posts)Thats about all I can think of where I have brand loyalty.
Oddly enough, I prefer albacore tuna from ALDI, which is by definition generic. The name brands of albacore tuna resemble cat food.

(9,962 posts)they will eat a WalMart knockoff of Blue Wilderness but I got some highly recommended stuff from Chewy.com and even the raccoons and possums turned up their noses at it and I had to throw it out and go back to the Rachael Ray. They prefer the salmon but will eat the chicken if Chewy is out of salmon.

(64,951 posts)It actually is a superior product.
It has a higher concentration of active ingredients, especially the surfactants that effectively micellize fatty/oily soils, and the mild secondary surfactants that cause lesser skin drying.
It works better simply because there's a higher % of good stuff in there. Same good stuff; more of it.
I've seen data from efficacy reports and only Palmolive liquid comes close.
So, if you're a brand loyal Dawn user, at least you're getting your money's worth.
yellowdogintexas
(22,243 posts)P & G sent over a spray truck full of Dawn and it took the grease right up.
It is used to remove oil from birds.
Back when Palmolive first brought out their green dish soap, every home in our little town received a sample. Soon after nearly every woman in town had peeling hands. Not painful just weird. Must have been our well water?
ProfessorGAC
(64,951 posts)The newer variants of Palmolive have a much higher amount of a high foaming, but weaker, secondary surfactant that is FAR milder on the skin.
That's been true for quite a long time.
The earliest version had a higher fraction of alkyl sulfates, as opposed to alkylethoxy sulfates. Alkylated sulfates are used very sparingly in personal care cleaning formulas because its dermal drying effect has been known for decades.
And, believe it or not, the original Palmolive green was less harsh on the hands than most of the comparable dish liquids at the time.
But, it's much milder now, and has been since at least the turn of the century.
Dawn actually isn't measurably milder, but it is quantitatively more effective.

Other brand loyalties that I will not deviate from inclusde:
Puffs Plus Lotion, Cascade Platinum dishwasher tabs, Gulden's Spicy Brown mustard, Slap Ya Mama Cajun Seasoning, and Watkins Vanilla. I was raised to be a devoted American car buyer with a heavy preference for GM. I still am.

(102,188 posts)I do still buy Dawn dish detergent and I'm a bit picky about coffee (I MADE myself suffer through a Costo-sized jar of Folger's black silk because, well, I don't like throwing things out, but even iced, yuck).
Facial moisturizers, sunscreen, makeup-- I do buy the same brands continually.
Dogfood (never the premium $$$, but I stay with the same one that has a good record for recalls, compositionally balanced and recommended-- and my dog likes).
Frankly, COVID-19 had me trying lots of generic products because those were the only ones available. I found that few products make that much difference. So, a "penny saved" ...

(14,853 posts)I can't think of anything else, except that I always buy Kroger Colombian coffee. That's probably not a "brand" since Kroger usually just slaps their label on other brands before selling the stuff at a discount. I've never found the brand that they're using for that particular coffee, though. Tried several Colombian coffee brands over the years, and the cheap Kroger is still my favorite. I don't even try the others anymore.
I received Scott TP as a substitute months ago, during a pick-up order, and I definitely don't like it! When blowing my nose with it, I have to fold it over a few times just to avoid blasting holes through that thin stuff! Plus I'm using much more of it, afraid of it otherwise tearing while doing the other business with it. And I don't like the expensive and super-fluffy TP either. Just generic and thin TP for me, but it needs to be thicker than Scott's!

Most other things I will go with what's on sale or what looks good. I don't buy a lot of packaged stuff, but when I do it's usually Whole Foods 365 brand which is actually really cheap. They have the best jar sauce and it's only about $2.95 for a large jar.
