Specifically, Im impressed that such a piece of garbage has managed to convince so many that its so goddamn amazing.
The list of grievances is to long to enumerate here but can be summed up this:
After more than a year of clunky workarounds, shortcuts, grudging concessions, and brute force, I have gotten to the point where my iPad can almost do most of the things that my cheap laptop does well and with ease.
Yes, yes, I know. iPad is all things to all people, and thou shalt not speak ill of the sacred Apple product line. But I am reminded dozens of times a daily of the many infuriating shortcomings of this marvelous product.
The only way that it is objectively superior to the aforementioned laptop is that I could probably throw the iPad farther.

(4,458 posts)So they suck at that function, even if you slap a keyboard on them. You can slap a leotard on a 300lbs man, but that won't mean great scores on the uneven parallel bars.

(63,195 posts)Youve stated it beautifully. Ive seen amazing works of art and music created and/or enhanced on iPads, but its poorly suited as a general purpose tool it regardless of how much shoehorning is attempted.

(96 posts)The problem is that iPads were designed to be smart phones, but they suck at that function, too.
And just to compound the problem, Apple keeps changing macOS (laptop) to be more like iOS (tablet) when they should do just the opposite.
Given the storage available, there is no reason that I shouldnt have the option on my iPad to say, I have a keyboard, pretend that you are MacBook.
The only reason I have an iPad is that I have an app (Foreflight) that wont run on my old Android based tablet. Of course the android should have an option that says, pretend that you are an iPad. Well, you can get an app to do that, but it is clunky and gets lousy reviews.
Ah, well, I will whine forever because the world didnt unite behind Linux. -Bello

(100,059 posts)I have found it's far superior to the iPad in every way. Especially in things like storage (where it can hold a 1TB memory card), handwriting recognition, and oh yeah it runs a full edition of Windows 10 so I can use all of my desktop apps on it.
I realized I sound like an advertisement there.

(7,715 posts)It is both a laptop and tablet. I paid less than $200 for it.
I am pretty sure it does everything and more than an iPad does.
To each their own, but I think the iPad is far too overpriced for what it does.

(7,715 posts)Now, it takes a wee bit of getting used to a Chromebook, as much of your stuff can be cloud-based. So, you need an internet connection to use it most effectively.

(102,197 posts)and for the purposes I use each, they both function impressively well.
I hear your cynicism and raise you one very happy customer. The ipad (even my old air 2) does things (streaming and Bluetooth compatibility and some exceedingly useful apps) so much better than my windows laptop. But I could not do without the latter for data-intensive or more complex applications. Nor those internet functions that really require windows compatibility.

But in my line of work, in the day to day of it, the iPad could scarcely be a worse choice.

(14,811 posts)I've never used them for anything but reading books on the Kindle app really.
I've never owned an Apple product myself. My younger boy bought an Ipad when he was in high school & my older boy got his first Iphone when he graduated from Navy boot camp & still uses them. He gets new ones every couple years & swears by them

(1,706 posts)DOS was much better in the beginning and I have seen nothing since to lead me to buy anything Apple.

(3,039 posts)I own a fleet of these products for compatibility testing and development. I have an iPad Pro, iPad Air 2020 and a Samsung Tab A that I currently use. The iPad Pro has a beautiful screen. Its become my TV but Covid burnt me out on video and music and audio books dont require high res video. It weights a ton too. The Samsung tablet is feather light and a nice screen. I play a games and surf the net on it. Its a 1 year old tablet and has every OS upgrade available. It crashes a lot. I am not a fan. The iPad Air 2020 is wonderful. Light weight, fast, good battery, etc. I have worked at Apple. I have worked for Google. Its a tool but its a horse race too. To quote the guy who developed the Motorola Razor, youre only as good as your last design.

(94,485 posts)The iPad I have is a great alternative to the laptop (much lighter, easy to flip to portrait mode) and didn't require any fixes to write with, read books, watch movies, look at pictures, draw.....
I could retire on the value of my Apple stock (bought at 65c a share) alone.

(63,195 posts)If Apple products are a good fit for someone, then thats terrific for them.
For me and for my requirements, the products are at best ill-suited and at worst terrible regardless of the stock price.
