A BOOK of Verses underneath the Bough,
A Jug of Wine, a Loaf of Bread—and Thou
Beside me singing in the Wilderness—
O, Wilderness were Paradise enow!

a bike with a baguette strapped onto the rear seat. I always carry my baguettes like this lady is doing or else you knock everyone and everything next to you.

seems like it would get dirty being out in the open like that. Maybe she has large wheels of cheese and whole hams at home.

I could get 6 day hikes with that combo here in the mountains. My favorite stay while on Navy 7 month cruise, Palermo Sicily. Would grab a fresh loaf from a street vendor’s wheel barrow full, go to a wine store, he would grab an empty bottle from the floor and rinse it, fill it from one of 5 kegs mounted in the wall above and push a cork in it. Grab some goat cheese, fill up a day pack and walk beyond the city and up one of many high pastures. Sit there alone, far away from sailors and spend the day consuming it all looking over the city with the ocean behind. Before cameras got small, I missed so many of my adventures abroad and here, never wanting to give up my wine, baguette and cheese in my pack to carry a camera. It’s all in my head though.

Interesting they would rinse out a bottle for you. Makes me wonder, did people bring their empties back to the shops in those days? 🤔

They where piled up. No labels. After 3 weeks at sea I did not think much of it. 40 Ops specialist crammed in OI Berthing, farting, snoring, burping, talking in sleep, the bottles did not bother me much. If we had masks way back then, nobody would have bitched about wearing em😷. You can see how the shore leave WAS heaven. I avoided bars and looking for women of the night, preferred to be far away from drunken sailors. Blessed to be in so many cities around the world, I wanted to get out and see the rural parts. Navy WAS and adventure. Sure wish iPhones with cameras were invented. Woulda fit in the pack with the wine and food. Ha!
