as in the multiple memes that "sliced bread is the best thing since Betty White" (Betty White was born in 1922) means that the machine with multiple parallel knife blades that sliced an entire loaf at once was invented in 1928.

"The best thing since sliced bread" became a saying when people found out how convenient that packaged pre-sliced bread was. Before that you had to slice your bread one slice at at time, with uneven results - like the slice I did this morning, which was so thick on one side it barely fit in the toaster.
