I fucking HATE meat kotexes. you know, those gross pads they use to absorb excess juices from packaged fresh retail meat. they are gross on principle, they mean the meat is full of water, in warm weather they make your trash stink big time. then they attract skunks and dogs. I HATE them.
I have a big stray we rescued a few years ago who has a bit of a trash addiction anyway. he also has a chronic health problem that already involves a lot of puking. (look up megaesophagus). he had a bad week starting on the 5th and I had just been getting food to stay down him on Thursday. Last night he got a bungied lid off the trash and ate a huge kotex out of a family pack of chicken breasts.
I see some of it came back up in the driveway, but it is the fucking thin plastic that is part of their structure that pisses me off the most! that has real obstruction potential. fucking fuckety fuck fuck.
at least he already has a vet appointment for tomorrow. I was hoping to be able to say he seemed to be getting back on his feet after last week, but who knows how he will be doing today.

(9,715 posts)or an additional freezer but we freeze our going to be stinky garbage. We call it freezer garbage.
We dont have curbside pickup and take our own garbage to the dump. Finding a place to keep that kind of garbage was very important its usually 4-5 weeks til we pack up and take a dump run so we had to find a method to keep the stink down.

(23,650 posts)I just squirt some dish soap on it, hold it under the faucet and hand wash it. I rinse then hand squeeze it to get all the liquid out. I have to wash my hands anyway after unpacking the meat so I just added this step. Works pretty well.

(55,007 posts)we already have a covered cheap ice cream bucket for "coyote scraps" that I don't want to put in the trash or that the chickens won't eat, shrimp shells and excess bones he can't have or when too many for the other dogs. we take that out every couple of weeks and dump it where the dogs wont get it. guess I need to get a box of kitchen trash bags for meat trays. grocery bags aren't quite right for the freezer.
this dog!

(9,715 posts)I save the envelopes that some of our online orders come in some are not recyclable so fill it up with freezer garbage. Plus they sit beautifully in the door rack (full freezer).
Havent done it but I sometimes think of sending it to a Republican rep. Seal it up frozen send away, be nice and ripe by the time it got there. Just a fantasy.

(18,402 posts)Dont buy pre-packaged meat, if thats possible in your area. Pick your cuts from the butcher at the counter; shell just wrap it in paper. If you need to freeze, remove meat, wrap in Saran, and put it in a freezer bag.

(55,007 posts)and even the local packing plant uses gross plastic. I make them wrap in paper, and would pay extra. it's the chicken from safeway that is the biggest problem for me. I don't have the means or time to search out better options, unfortunately.

(13,869 posts)this is definetely a case of First World problems:
----------I hate the little pads that groceries put in meat packages,
versus
----------I haven't been able to afford any meat in two months.

She was thrilled, but soon had to admit that she was a bit displeased that the car did not have seat heaters and her first job was going to take her to a cold climate.
now, kids' expectations is a whole 'nother rant.

What is the pad that comes with meat?
Absorbent meat pads or absorbent meat soakers are the little package that often sits between your raw meat and your butchers tray. They are essentially an absorbent pad with an often plastic type of cover.
meat soakers! that is grosser than meat kotex!
