Oakland As pitcher Chris Bassitt was carted off the field Tuesday after he was struck in the head by a line drive.
In an initial update, the As said the 32-year-old starter was conscious and aware while being taken to a hospital. The incident occurred during the second inning of a game against the White Sox at Chicagos Guaranteed Rate Field.
Following the game, a 9-0 White Sox win, As Manager Bob Melvin provided a statement in which he said the team did not think Bassitt suffered a major eye injury as the ball may have struck the pitcher further down his face.
Hes got some cuts. They had to do some stitches, Melvin said. Hes in a scan and well know more about potential fractures or whatever tomorrow, or later tonight.
Bassitt was hit on the right side of his head after throwing a fastball on a 1-1 count to Chicagos Brian Goodwin, who drove it back up the middle. Bassitt immediately fell to the ground and put his hands to his face as medical staffers came out to the mound to attend to him. Players for both sides showed their concern.

(23,813 posts)I saw Jack Hamilton hit Tony Conigliaro in the head, 2nd hand. Tony C never recovered. That's why helmet safety is a lot better today.

(9,998 posts)It was a very unfortunate incident, but the bottom line is, the ball was not caught. It was obviously a very powerful hit, and far from a "freebie." And it may have played out even more in their favor had the ball got into the outfield.

(43,049 posts)good chance he could have had a base hit out of it anyway.
Be that as it may, this was a pretty serious injury, and in the confusion, was there any thought to throwing him out while he was trotting up to first? Who would have done it anyway?

(36,212 posts)And I don't think he's sleeping well tonight waiting for the phone to ring with some news. Hopefully, good news. Through no fault of his own...

(4,109 posts)Bruised up something awful for several weeks. I cant even imagine getting a line drive to the face.
Hope he pulls through ok.
