It always seems it's a war over "American Values"; whether they be unconstrained "capitalism", imposed democrocy, liberal thinking, or some other concept clumped under "western civilization". We're trying to impose some form of our civilization onto something where it is, at the time, terrifically foreign. Kind of like tree grafting.

So we become engaged in some classic struggle to see which side "wins". And in the end, both sides expend enormous energy and make tragic sacrifices only to have people ultimately betray their side. Vietnam, China and Russia (the "communist" aligned powers) look more "western" in some aspects today than they did many decades ago. Their people embraced a lot of "western" consumer habits. And in truth, we've absorbed some of their "culture".

The Taliban are fighting the same thing. In the end, I'd bet it's a lost cause for them. At some point, aspects of our culture will graft onto their society. Their "version" of life is just too dark IMHO.

keep em down on the farm once they've seen Paree?

I know I don't have the sentence correct, but it's close.

Now that the interwebs are available in Outer Mongolia via sattelite how can you keep the world in the dark?
