(53,921 posts)I even drew a cartoon panel about it when I was a kid, because I didn't understand the insult. Oh yeah, I was an Army brat, and was surrounded by women in combat boots!
Laura PourMeADrink
(42,770 posts)morning. When is the last time you thought about your cartoon about it? Guess it was an insult back then cuz women weren't in combat roles?
Behind the Aegis
(53,921 posts)I didn't understand then, and still really don't understand now, what the real insult is supposed to be. Perhaps you are are correct about it being an insult about women not being in combat roles, but I wonder if the bigger insult was meant to be it was a non-traditional role for women.

It's WWII era. A woman in an occupied country often had to do whatever necessary to survive.

(33,475 posts)...they've been dead many years, and I am at peace with where their bodies are and, more importantly, where they still live in me, for good and for bad, and I was just employing a macabre sense of humor.
In fact, I buried my mother's death, which I attended for long horrible months, with humor, some of it, on reflection, quite sick.
I got better. So did my father. And then he died.
Whether their remains have shoes of any type or not means nothing about them at all. All in all, she was a woman, and he was a man, and I shall not see their like again.
There are many other mother related insults, of course, and when I was a kid, in the era where the "combat boots" joke was widely used, I'm sure I used some of them myself.
I have told my sons that if they do not make jokes at my funeral, although I won't be there to check on it, they will not be showing my memory respect.

I'd forgotten that but you helped me remember. "Thanks a lot", as we said back in the day in a very
sarcastic way.
