Recommendation for any 90s alternative rock fan who's felt lost in the 21st Century pop music world:
Check out "If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power" by Halsey.
It was produced by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails fame (as well as various film soundtracks), and it is absolutely incredible.
Literally the best new music album I've heard in years.
I had known about Halsey for a while, and I thought she had a good voice but pretty much considered her strictly in the pop genre.
However, she brings in Reznor and Ross and together they absolutely take off to an entirely new and unexpected level.
Standout tracks for me include "You Asked for This," "I'm Not a Woman, I'm a God," and the bonus track, "People Disappear Here," all of which show off their strong Reznor/Ross beat influence backed by Halsey's powerful vocals.
Also, Dave Grohl does some guest drumming, and the album's first track "The Tradition" seems very Tori Amos-inspired.
In essence, it's the perfect remedy for any fan of 90s alt-rock who's felt like they've been lost in the musical desert for the past two decades.
