(15,682 posts)I read without glasses and wear glasses the rest of the time. It works. I hear in twenty years when I get cataract surgery, it will flip.
Faux pas
(14,644 posts)looking old is way better than looking stoopid! Oh and PS they make no line bifocals now.

(5,122 posts)And look no different. I have only worn progressive lenses. I dont see why I would want 2 separate things when I can get it all in one pair.

(759 posts)I still use readers when reading in bed. Otherwise I get a kink in my neck trying to use the progressives. The reader area is at the bottom of the frames.

(60,010 posts)After cataract surgery in both eyes this spring, new eyeglasses were required, as expected.
Hated the feeling of having a restricted field of vision, esp. since middle of vision is ok.
So now I use readers and distant glasses, found a nice double case that holds both pairs. Since I rarely go anywhere nowadays, it works out ok to switch glasses quickly when necessary. I use the readers most of the time, because computer and e-books fill most of the days now.

(20,138 posts)I spend my workday in front of a computer. I have glasses for distance - driving, watching TV - and my computer glasses that are lined bifocals so I don't have to take them off to read. The work better for me than progressives.

(11,242 posts)having an (unidentified and undifferentiated) field of vision that is just total - fuzz. Sweet! Had a pair for a couple of years - and felt like chucking them out into the road - pretty much every day.
Faux pas
(14,644 posts)too bad. It was the lined bifocals that drove me nuts. Had them for a day and went back to get what I wanted. The eye doctor didn't want to cooperate, my insurance and union straightened her out swiftly.

(66,285 posts)I started going bald at age twenty-four, so I don't think it's the bifocals that make me look old.
OTOH, I don't think I have ever, in my life, looked stupid. It helps that I carry a book with me wherever I go...

(66,285 posts)And yes, I do have a very nice tweed sport coat with suede elbow patches. It's hard to wear such a garment in such a way as to convey that you're wearing it ironically...

well.
That approach looks ridiculous.

(18,402 posts)I've had them for decades, but usually when I read I just push them up on my head. At least it's a better look.

(9,136 posts)I just look over the top to my glasses to read. Ive never been able to get used to looking through the bottom of the lenses to read. My dad wore trifocals and had no problem, though.
