This travel package has glass-domed cabins with a once-in-a-lifetime view.https://www.thrillist.com/news/nation/off-the-map-travel-glass-domed-cabins-watch-the-northern-lights
Travel is still limited, at best, and probably involves a lot more daydreaming than actually traveling at this point. But if you're a planner, Off the Map Travel has a new escape that might subdue a couple of years of bottled-up wanderlust. The trip involves a stay in new glass igloo cabins located in Kilpisjärvi, Finland. They are part of a travel package from Off the Map that includes two different cabins with glass roofs for your northern lights viewing experience. They're part of the travel company's "Stars of Scandinavia" experience, which shuttles you around Lapland with plenty of opportunities for stargazing and aurora hunting.
Not only are the Wau House Igloo cabins stunning, but they're genuinely useful in trying to catch the bucket list display. "The northern lights are magical, but you never know when they will appear, so we wanted to give our guests the best chance and not miss a second of the action with this new travel experience," says Founder of Off the Map Travel Jonny Cooper. The outdoor lighting is even red to ensure that stargazers don't have their night vision negatively impacted.
The next leg of the experience takes guests south to Rovaniemi and the glass-roofed Lappish Kammi Suites. You'll also get a feel for the region with husky sledding, a fat bike tour, snowmobile treks, and opportunities to learn about Sami culture in the package. The trip isn't on the house, though. The six-day, five-night package costs £1795 per person (about $2,078) and does not include flights. It does, however, provide the potential to check something off your bucket list.

(115,586 posts)I have seen the northern lights, once from an airplane, and another time - believe it or not - from my back yard in Minneapolis. And even under those limited conditions they were amazing. But this would be another whole level, seeing them across the sky without any light pollution. My dream trip is the Hurtigruten cruise from Bergen all the way to Kirkenes (where you really can see Russia from your house). Hurtigruten runs all year round, and they even have a cruise called the "Northern Lights Promise." Maybe someday...

I'm sure the Finnish experience is much more luxurious...

(1,607 posts)No electricity or indoor plumbing. The night skies were incredible up there and I got to see the aurora several times. If you live in a place like that and have to go outside to visit the outhouse at night youre going to see the northern lights. Guaranteed.
The next year I moved down to Kalispell and never saw the night sky again.

(14,818 posts)This was back in the early '30's or so. Less light pollutuon.
It was a hot summer night so her sibs, and parents were sleeping on the roof top (apt building).
At some point part of the sky (probably northwards) starting to sort of pulse red, and maybe another color.
Finally they saw... The Curtains !!!
Like wow.
Even with less light pollutuon that had to be some pretty strong activity from our sun to have it come down that
far!
I wonder - maybe there's some record of showing the sun's activity going back decades. 🤔
My dad I believe saw them when he was visiting Seattle, WA for work!
I also have a long time on line acquaintance who lives in Finland. He's about a third of the way up in his country. He has seen them, and posted a photo here, and there.
If you want to track them go to the Geophysical Institute.
It's part of Alaska Uni. Tthey show both north and south with maps for most parts of the world.
When I hear that there's going to be higher sun activity I've been checking them for a bunch of years now. Very cool site!
