Visited this site today.

Nice Fall walk in the woods.

Legend is the young soldiers Mother would sit and rock on the farmhouse porch, staring at the tree every evening.

Only one tine of the pitchfork remains, visible in the second photo.

1. Heard this story a couple of years ago

Personally, I think its a tall tale, but I'll share.

I was getting some trees removed from a property I previously owned in Fauquier County, VA. Somehow the topic of Civil War relics came up, and the arborist who was cutting the trees said he was working a property in Spotsylvania County and came across a tree that had the blade from a Civil War era sword embedded in the trunk. The reason I think its a tall tale was he said if you looked at the blade you could clearly see the words "Confederate States".

Could be a tall tale - or it could be he just repeated the story wrong.

Friend of mine works with local museum, he said it is fairly common to find tools from long ago embedded in trees.
