Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI wanted to like my late aunt's cat, but I just don't know if it's cute enough ...
I just don't know about him ... he's a bit homely ...
He is also quite aloof and standoffish, I really can't tell if he likes me at all.

(33,643 posts)I swear if I let him he'd be on top of me like 12 hours a day.
And I'm also a total softie so I make for an excellent subject as well.
Also, given his name is Jean-Luc ... assimilation was probably inevitable.

(33,643 posts)There are 5 other indoor cats and then a host of ferals that live outside that she fed, got fixed (if possible), etc.
Her house is staying in the family (belongs to my 2 cousins) and someone is paid to come to feed them all 2X a day.
All the indoor ones but JL started out as feral, but this little guy was her 'splurge', a pure-bred Burmese (her sister, my mom, has 3 Burmese as well) she got as a baby, and paid I'm guessing quite a bit for.
JL was very attached to my aunt, and nobody in the family wanted him to have to live with no hooman of his own, so I was recruited. My previous boy passed in January 2021, at age 17.5 yo, and I'd had him with me for 17 years, so ... timing so happened where I was ready to think about another kitteh, and then JL became available (sadly of course) and needed a person, so what was I going to do?

(11,612 posts)She's very very scared. She was the last thing left in the house and they had to get her out before the new owners came. I had to camp out in the basement for a couple hours to catch her. She's been here 2 months now and hasn't come out from under the bed in the spare room upstairs in the farmhouse. I take her food and gave her her own litter box up there and she will let me reach under give her treats and pet her a little but won't come out. Hoping at some point she warms up.
Hugh_Lebowski
(33,643 posts)It's been 2 weeks exactly for this kiddo. He started out living under the bed for the first few days, coming out really only to eat his wet food for breakfast and dinner or use the potty. I coaxed him out a couple times and picked him up and brought him to the couch, where he was willing to hang out as long as he was attached to my lap or chest, but he'd only last 20 mins or so before he decided he needed to hide again.
He still typically retreats to under my bed to sleep during the day, but after day 5 I started giving him wet food dinner when I went to bed, in the kitchen ... and locking him out of the bedroom so he'd have to get used to the house while I slept. But ... I live alone, no other pets, and my neighborhood is very quiet so there's nothing for him to really be scared of at night.
After about 1 week, he almost never sleeps in the daytime, and instead just wants to be on top of me like 12 hours a day. My aunt obviously spoiled him, and this breed (Burmese) is well known for being very affectionate and attached to their hooman. 'Velcro kitties' is a very apt description.
It's a honestly a bit much, coming from 17 years with a much more standoffish Snowshoe Siamese ... but he's so friggin cute and sweet it's hard to turn him down
I dunno if you have reason why it's a bad idea in your case, but the locking him out of rooms with beds at night seemed to help with 'fear of the new house' in this cat's case.

(11,612 posts)I have 4 other cats and I sort of want her to feel like she has a safe space because they are always very territorial in the house. I'm hoping she warms up eventually I try to spend some time each day petting her under there.
Three years ago I actually smuggled a cat home from Mexico in a duffle bag I carried on the plane. She was coming through the bars of the window of the little casa we had rented at the edge of the jungle south of Vallarta to eat leftover fish every night. When we were about to leave I went to the tienda and got the biggest sack they had and filled it with cat food they sold in bulk. Took it to the owner of that casa and asked her to feed the little cat who visited every day. She said "No senor we dont want those cats they are wild jungle cats but I will give this food to my friend who has a cat." Pissed me the fuck off the little black cat was not a wild animal but very friendly and hungry. The next day I took off the pillow case and put that cat in there waded over the river with her over my shoulder and took her on the bus into town where I bought a duffle bag. Sent her right through the x-ray machine at the airport and onto the plane. When we reached customs in the US they discovered her but the officer had no idea what to do because they had never seen anyone smuggle a cat so he just told me "get out of here with it!" Our big gringo cats did not like her I told my wife they were probably fucking maga cats who hate mexicans! She hid in the upstairs bedroom for almost a year but now shes the most social cat we have you cant sit or lay anywhere without boca on top of you! I'm hoping the new cat nova who is tiger striped and much bigger will socialize eventually as well I dont know yet.
Hugh_Lebowski
(33,643 posts)That's a great story about Boca ... very cool of you!
May Nova soon take her rightful place in the household and become simpatico with her kitty cousins
