Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsNeed help finding a song posted more than a month ago; it was a musical version of a Taoist parable
I can't believe I didn't bookmark it!
Anyway, a close friend just had some really bad news, and I want to send the link to him. I already told him the parable months ago (it's one of my favorites; I live by it), but I think the song might help him right now.
Basically, the song was a musical retelling of the old Taoist story of the farmer and his horse. For those who aren't familiar with the parable, a farmer has a single horse, and the horse runs away. The neighbors all come over and say, "What bad luck!" And the farmer replies, "How do you know it's bad?"
Then the horse returns, and it brings with it another 7 horses. The neighbors all come over and say, "What good luck!" And the farmer replies, "How do you know it's good?" It goes on like that from there. The teaching being, we can't know whether something is really good or bad, because we don't know what the ultimate outcome will be.
Does anyone remember that post? Can anyone help me find either it or the song? It was posted more than a month ago, since I know I responded to it and it's not in My Posts. I tried doing a site search, but I wasn't even sure what search terms to try. I tried "farmer horse," but I don't even know if those words were used; in any event, I didn't find it that way.
I thought of trying different forums, but I don't know if it was in Music, Buddhism, the Lounge, or even GD. I know that it did show up in Greatest Threads, because that's where I saw it.
Please, I'd appreciate any help! Thanks in advance!

(2,194 posts)if maybe you don't regularly clear out your browser history, maybe scroll through that to around about the time you visited the post - maybe you'll find it there?

(1,160 posts)Again, my problem is that I don't know what search terms to use and I click on a lot of DU links in any given day.
But I think I might have liked the singer enough that I might have gone to YouTube to see what else he'd done, so maybe if I search for YouTube I'll find it. (I've already gone to YouTube and tried searching; alas, no luck).
Thank you! I'm definitely going to go try this now.

(1,160 posts)I know that there are close to a million versions of Alan Watts telling the story on YouTube; I actually sent my friend a link to one of the versions a few months ago. I was just hoping to find the song, thinking that that might help now (my friend would be able to sing it to himself when he's feeling overwhelmed).
I really appreciate your suggestion!

(6,280 posts)For future reference, all I did was enter "Taoist Parable Democratic Underground" into Google search. I found your song on the 1st entry.

(1,160 posts)I used the search on DU, which, tbh, I've never had much luck with. Maybe from now on I should just use regular Google (although I wouldn't imagine that it would make any difference). Just in case, though, I'll probably use regular Google in the future.
Again, and this really does bear repeating, I am so, so grateful for your kindness in finding this for me, all the more so because you didn't know the song off the top of your head and went to the effort of searching for it. Thank you again!
