We see it from our house everyday.
Edit: The Volcano is not very active since 2010. But she does like to let off a little steam occasionally. Shes a bit shy and hides in the clouds quite often.
Today shes beautiful. We arent in danger from that one. But we live at the other end of the lake at the base of the Tonorio Volcano. Which is mostly inactive. For now.

(149,580 posts)The little puff of steam/smoke does give me pause, however.

(675 posts)My wife, son and I stayed for 4 nights at the Arenal Lodge which is located on a hilltop adjacent to the volcano, back in 2005? You are truly fortunate to be able to live there. Some of the most dramatic lava displays were seen on a clear night. Breathtaking!

(25,816 posts)we hiked up the Rincon de la Vieja volcano. Very beautiful, no lake though.
I loved Costa Rica. Stayed at The Pura Vida Hostel in Tamarindo. I was the oldest person there.
Young people from almost 20 different countries were there, like a big family.

(16,336 posts)Tamarindo is way high on our list of places to visit. Sounds like one of the chillest places on the planet...

(25,816 posts)The area I stayed in was the older part of town, several hostels and a few cheaper motels.
Lots of cool bars and stores and almost everything is open air. I went surfing twice, (I used to
surf long ago), rented a bike, drank a lot of the great Costa Rican beer and went sight-seeing.
I was on a tight budget, hence the hostel, but I loved the hostel--two outside kitchens, everybody
helped out and shared, music almost nightly, or else right next door at the bar. Fairly cheap food,
much of sold on the street.
Around the bend to the south, pretty close by, was the rich section. Large hotels and fancier restaurants.
There's a spectrum of places to stay. I wanted to move down there over 20 years ago but could never
swing it. The prices were much lower then.
I recommend Tamarindo as a destination. As a surfer in my younger days, I admired Robert August, one
of the two surfers in the movie 'Endless Summer' (The first one). He has a board shop on the beach and I stopped
in one day. He asked me if I wanted to buy a board and I said that I was a fan and just wanted to meet him.
So he shut down and we went next door to an open air bar on the beach where I bought him drinks.
Tamarindo has a few guys who'll try to scam tourists. We were able to buy some decent weed by our
second day.
Farmer's Market on Saturdays, used book stores, local American hippies, all night bars and parties.
I saw the police only once or twice.

(16,336 posts)if I had needed any more convincing, this would have done the trick. Sounds right up my alley...if I make it, I'll raise a glass to you!

(12,022 posts)That was a pretty big explosion in '68.
When I hiked up it a few years ago, I was nervous the whole time. But wow, what a beautiful place. And the wild orchids!

(6,846 posts)You don;t need a full eruption to get negative health effects from an active volcano. But it surely is beautiful.

(6,846 posts)I mean specifically in the vidinity of an active volcano. It's not just "steam" they put out.

(24,274 posts)that I had recorded. It was about Lake Arenal. It looks like a beautiful place.
LakeArenal
(28,813 posts)Lots of rain. Lots of Sun. Gigantic bugs.
Much different to live here than to visit.
Mr.Bill
(24,274 posts)that it was looking like it's going to rain every time they were outside.

Sun and rain at the same time. Coasts have different weather.
