The DU Lounge

I don't know any such folks personally. I stay away from them and the folks I hang with are generally overwhelmingly liberal. I mean, artists, right? And at the shelter we don't talk politics. It's all about the animals, at least most of the time. I have my suspicions about a couple of people in my class, and of course there are the old farts in the kaffeeklatsch at the local 7-11 (they got kicked out of the Burger King next door, but I think the 7-11 owners are too nice).
Anyway, I had occasion to go into the laundry at the shelter yesterday to pick up some cleaning rags, and one of the volunteers (who I don't know) was holding forth to an Animal Control officer (female) about how we are "in these crazy end times" and a bunch of Q-related nonsense. I listened for a couple of minutes and noted that the Animal Control officer looked a little uncomfortable. If the volunteer coordinator had been there I might have told her and suggested that she discuss with the woman that we are about animals and their health and safety, but she wasn't. I did mention it to the girl who runs the stray hotel. She can run with it if she wants to, and she just might. She said she had a friend who had lost their whole family to that business.
It was creepy.

Ive read that sometimes theyre so thrilled to find people who agree with them that if they think they have theyll just bubble over with pent up things to share. Most dont make that mistake though and can be perfectly competent at work.

(45,380 posts)it's best not to even talk to such cult members because they will get hostile if they can pull you into an argument.

(1,182 posts)appearing to be "all ate up with it", spouting end times stuff, I just say, "well, I was raised Catholic and my mom always said that Jesus told us NO ONE knows when the end times will come, so anyone who says they know is bearing false witness."
That usually works, unless, of course, they think all Catholics are bad, which sometimes happens.
But, if they dispute me, I can say, "Are you calling my mom a liar?"

(22,569 posts)Half of them are card carrying Republican jerks. I don't think art has anything to do with being a liberal. But I understand your point. There's one in every crowd is what my gran used to say. Unfortunately, now I think that's a low estimate.
There's a woman in our town who regularly attends town board meetings. Once a month, second Tuesday, she's there rain or shine and she always signs up for public comments. She has been doing this since way before "Q" became a thing.
She invariably, finds fault with something, no matter how loosely tied based on her religious beliefs, to complain about. You can hear the eye rolls start every time she gets up to speak. None of it makes sense. Everyone is thankful when her time expires.
She doesn't seem to acknowledge the insane irrelevance of her comments. I don't think she can. So I doubt she ever will. I'm sure she sees it as her civic duty to be there to represent "poor helpless babies" and the "persecuted for our faith" contingent.
I worry that one day she might fall to the floor in convulsions or worse bring a concealed weapon.
Everyone has a breaking point and the psychologically fragile need our love and attention more than anyone. I wish that the council would find a way to engage her, to help her feel needed and heard. Isn't that all any of us wants?
I also think it's in our best interest to keep our friends close and our enemies closer. Especially if those enemies and their friends, have a loose grasp on reality.
The issue is much bigger than we dare to believe and each of our crazed examples are only the tip of the iceberg. It's a tiresome task, being en garde, but as odd as it seems maybe it's our civic duty, too.
