Grocery store: I take an item or 2, remaining items way back & no longer visible .. do I move ..

Last edited Mon Jan 3, 2022, 05:53 AM - Edit history (2)

Let's say I grab one or two of the same item from a low shelf, and there are still ones remaining, but they are far back and one would have to bend way over or get on the floor to see them. So, I think about others and move up one or two of the back items near the front of the shelf so it/they are easily visible (edit: and reachable).

(There are times when it's hard to find a certain item in a very busy shelf full of similar items, so even sometimes when all items are front and visible, it still can take a long time to find what I'm looking for. With the item I'm looking for being way back in the back of some narrow hole, on a lower shelf, well, I'm sure I've missed seeing something I had spent several minutes looking for that was there.)

But I keep wondering am I really doing others a favor? Do the grocery store shelf stockers clue off the empty spots (if I had not moved items forward) to know to put more items on the shelf or something? So I might be screwing up their system?

I assume computers keep track of what's been purchased and what's been put on the shelf... but ... is the system that good? It could be foiled by shoplifters for example. Edit: or idiots taking an item but then later putting it back on some shelf 3 aisles away.

I have been wondering about this almost every time that this situation arises. Thanks

Edited to change "every time I go to the grocery store" to "almost every time that this situation arises "

whenever there was a lull in customer traffic, meaning we were expected to leave our registers and do exactly what you describe - pull the merchandise to the front of the shelves to give the appearance of abundance.

Inventory is largely done by computer, with hand inventory done on a regular schedule to cross check for “shrinkage” (shoplifting.)

I think it’s perfectly fine that you are being considerate to your fellow shoppers by making it easier for them to see what’s available.

Carry on.

A long time ago someone here posted a thread about returning carts at the grocery store. I think the person said that if you return the cart, you cut down on the hours needed and therefore, possibly cut out a job for some person who gathers up all the carts.

OK, so I still return the cart but I do think about that as I return it.

And there's one item (small recycled trash bags) that are always so far back on the top shelf that I have to climb to get them - and someone taller than me always seems to stop and offer to reach them for me.

by the bottom shelf or two and literally having to get down on hands and knees on the floor. And with a magnifying glass in hand (my glasses fog up with the mask, so I almost always have a magnifying glass in-hand), a tall old man on the floor holding a magnifying glass and reaching wayyyyy back for something on the bottom shelf must be quite a sight.

(Yes, I've read and tried many tips on the glasses fogging problem, I'm just not at the stage where I would put double-sided tape on the top or something that would make it difficult to pull down and I'd have tape or a bandaid or whatever other solutions I've read still under my eyes).

Back to the top shelf problem, and say a 5' tall woman trying to reach for something -- if she is making good progress at getting at it, I let it be -- I feel like it would be sort of like a version of man'splaining if I asked if she could use some help or if I just got the item and gave it to her (of course I'd ask how many of the items she wanted and -- having broken the man'helping barrier -- if she could use help getting any other items etc.).

It's always that one thing and it always seems like someone tall is passing by and gets it for me. I must look pretty funny preparing to climb up. And of course I've done the same thing for shorter people!

As for masks, I don't wear glasses, but the masks I use have a metal strip on the nose part which can be adjusted to make it fit more snugly. They're KN95s or N95s which I've gotten at my local gas station since the beginning, believe it or not. Those were the first masks I saw, so I've continued to get them there. The station is run by a nice couple from India and the guy has now gotten other masks in, has suggested I might like the "prettier" ones, but I've stuck with the same ones and gave them to friends and my brother when masks were hard to come by in the beginning.

litter down from the top shelf. It's a risky maneuver, so I'm always grateful when a taller person--usually a man--stops by to help me.

I am a cane dependent 71-year-old woman with back & neck problems, so handling those bags is difficult enough without having to get them from the top shelf.

I can remember my friend climbing up to get cat litter for me! But where I go now, it's on the bottom shelf, I wish you could go where I do, they're always offering to help me - or to carry my bags out to my car. I know it's a PIA, but you need to ask someone who works there to help you - they'd rather do that than to have it fall on your head!

Trying to get an item on a top shelf is always a bit scary, I am afraid it is going to fall on me because I cannot get a good grasp of it. I have to keep jumping up and bringing the item closer to the edge.

There is one item I can never reach, it is soy milk in the refrigerated dairy section. It is way in the back of the top shelf. I have to stand there and wait for a tall person to come my way. I hate to impose upon people, but there is no other way to get it.

The good 👍.

1). Yes, you are doing the clerks and the next customer a favor by fronting the product.

2). Stores do track sales through the register for reorder so it will automatically do so when it hits a designated number of sales.

The less good

3). You are doing clerks work (similar to using a self checkout) and by doing so lessening the need for a paid employee to do so, in essence cutting their hours. That argument is valid but can be offset by the potential for increased sales (and hours are generated by either product movement or dollar sales, systems vary) by the next customer who picks up the fronted (or faced) items. So I can see it both ways.

4). Some chains are using robots that go down the aisle looking for holes in the shelf stock level to generate ordering information or pull lists from the store back-stock and a faced shelf may defeat that system.

So that’s semi knowledgeable my two cents on your practice for what it’s worth.

As a shorter person, I really resent having to try to climb the shelves of the milk refrigerators to reach the last two cartons at the very back of the top shelves. Not only does it look stupid doing so, but if, by chance, the foothold fails, I'd probably be held responsible for the damage. Yet with fewer and fewer employees around and fellow (taller) shoppers trying to avoid others due to COVID, what choice is left?

At least in my area of Colorado--whether brand new stores or those recently remodeled. It irks me no end--especially when I can see workers in back within the dairy area that could come forward and slide them towards the front. Yet, it really is a bigger issue than that. What percentage of grocery store shoppers are short enough that this becomes a major issue.

shorter people, and if I have time while shopping and I'm taking items on the edge of shelves, I will try to pull items farther back forward. I wish the same was always done with items on the lowest shelves.

With items like canned cat food, where there might be 20 flavors but only a couple your discerning cat will eat, having cans of certain flavors left at the back of shelves while others are moved around can make for a really time-consuming search.
