(28,806 posts)The lake thing is a rivalry between states.
More than Minnesota. The story goes something like this: according to the Wisconsin DNR, Wisconsin has 15,074 lakes. Minnesota, by comparison, has 11,842 based on stats available from the Minnesota DNR.

They never interview anyone from Delaware. And I would love to ask them to find Delaware on a map. I see the presidential motorcade go by from time to time out my back window. (5,821 posts)New Jersey was a dumping ground of waste from NYC and from the many chemical factories and oil refineries located there.
When I was a newspaper reporter in the 1970s-80s in NJ, it seemed like there was a story every other day about someone discovering 50 or so leaking barrels of unknown chemicals on a farm, near a lake, or some wooded area. Landfills were piled to overflowing and leached toxic wastes into surrounding areas including rakes, streams and the Raritan Bay. Companies had paid guys with trucks to haul their toxic waste away and secretly dump it somewhere, not caring if it poisoned wells, rivers, etc.
NJ Congressman Jim Florio sponsored the first Superfund law. The Superfund was used to clean up many, many waste sites around the state, as well as elsewhere in the U.S.
It is really good to know that you were unaware of it, because it means the EPA has done its job cleaning up most of the mess. NJ was once nicknamed the Garden State because of the many homeowner run "truck gardens" that supplied fresh produce to NYC. In the 1980s it became known as the Garbage State. Probably now it should be called the High Property Tax State.
