Anyone paying Caregiver or Nanny

Looking at options for MiL. From quick review this morning it does not seem that paying and 1099 caregivers is doable and the only "above board" process is to W2 employees.

Any thoughts for others that are paying for in home care?

1. A few years ago

I paid carers from an agency and one who was freelancing. The freelancer, under the table I guess, was much better. She said she was filing as an independent contractor, but am not sure that absolved me of tax liability, even if true. I was wary about whether the law would catch up with me and the freelancer. A lawyer friend advised me to forget it. So I did. She was a wonderful helper. I could not have kept my partner or my mother home as I did without her. Two years ago I paid 16 bucks an hour for 4 half days a week. FWIW. I found her by word of mouth.
