A few years ago we babysat our 3 year-old grandson and 10-month-old granddaughter for two weeks, so that my son and wife could visit her parents who were teaching in South Africa. We raised 3 kids, but watching our grandkids for two weeks was excruciatingly exhausting. It didn't help that I was up half the night changing diapers and giving the baby a bottle. Eventually, my husband slept in a separate room, and I slept with the two kids. Now we have agreed to babysit another grandchild, age 3, this coming spring while another son and his wife go to Hawaii for a week. This will include their 2 dachshunds. I am already tired thinking about.

Only son is not at all interested in reproducing.

But I'll say this, that when I had my first child, and we lived in the same city with my husband's parents, they made it very clear that they were not available to babysit. I was not happy with that, but they were already over 70. So we got whatever babysitters we needed. And honestly, we never once thought of going away for even several days, let alone a couple of weeks. I honestly think that parents these days think parenting is vastly more difficult than it really is.

Actually, having been through a toddler and one infant, I’d call this combo THREE Big Jobs.
