(who will be 18 pretty soon) similar to the one in this picture.
Our dog then, and the present one, would have liked to use it as it was when the kid got a bigger bed, but instead I put a cover on the foam baby mattress and put it on the floor.

All three of our daughters slept between us when they were infants. It made it convenient for my wife because she didn't have to get up to nurse. They all hit their own point where they wanted to sleep alone and made the transition. We thought it was so cute that the sheltie pup wanted to sleep with her head on my wife's pillow. Now we often wake up at 3 a.m. to find that we're both on her side of the bed and the sheltie is splayed out all over my side - horizontally. My big guy (cat) is easier. He just spreads out lengthwise under my arm and purrs all night - he purrs if you LOOK at him.
