(11,064 posts)brakes and are lighter.
The Thunderbird was built at a time when the roads were not as crowded and drivers left more space between the cars.
Now, when a driver of a modern car pulls in front of a 57 Thunderbird and steps on the brakes in what can be considered a normal manner, the T-Bird driver can be still moving forward while trying to get the car to slow down or stop with the drum brakes.
In addition to having drum brakes, the Thunderbird is also a heavy car and can weigh twice as much or almost twice as much as some modern cars. It has both a heavy box frame and a heavy X frame. In an accident, it will crush any modern car put in front of it while protecting the driver and passenger in the Thunderbird.
If your mother ever gives the car to you, my recommendation would be to swap out the drum brakes and have disc brakes installed. And, when you get in to drive it, watch out for the left knee.

(21,786 posts)there were a small number offered with factory bodies but for the most part when you bought a Duesenberg you got the chassis and a coachbuilder (Weymann, Rollston, Derham, LeBaron, etc) did the bodywork. Most coachbuilders went out of business, or were bought out by car makers who used the name on "prestige" models, hence Cadillac Fleetwood, Chrysler LeBaron, Rolls-Royce Mulliner Park Ward, Jaguar Vanden Plas, and so on.

(6,347 posts)I have a co-worker well over 6 foot who was astonished that he even fit in the car!!
Starting price is around $12,000... but the extras add up pretty quickly!
But it's most certainly the first and only car I will ever buy new... so I'm glad I splurged for the extras.

(64,406 posts)The first one made mincemeat of the Veyron on Top Gear's track. The second made the original Veyron look like a doorstop in the top speed department, causing Volkswagen to toss millions more at their baby to beat this little pokey American company.
The SSC Tuatara should make short work of that shortly.

The two door cabriolet was especially nice.
I also like the old French pre-war cars like the Delage and the Delahaye. Here's a Delage Aerosport Coupe.
Or the Citroen Traction convertible.
Also a 1966 Maserati Sebring could find a nice home in my driveway if it ever needed a place to stay.
And at the risk of being laughed at for my taste because it can be a bit bizarre, I would love to have an old smooth-riding Nash Ambassador like this one.
