Question about movie, OUT OF AFRICA. At the beginning of the flick,

the Meryl Streep character agrees to marry a man, when they and some other people are out shooting skeet or quails or something.

I got the distinct impression neither loved the other, and also that both were not destitute. So...why did they get married? (Later on he runs around on her and she throws him out.)

If women wanted to get ahead or be accepted in their society they had to be 'owned' by a man. That was well into the 20th Century. Women have had to fight for every single gain we have today. The only single women who were accepted in society were widows.
