It's a lot harder rockin' than the Kinks generally sounded in the 60s and I suspect it's from a later date. Do you know the date of this live recording? The Van Halen cover I believe came out in 1978 and supposedly lead guitarist Dave Davies of the Kinks got very annoyed because when the Kinks played their own version at concerts in the late 70s and 80s, Van Halen fans would go up to them and accuse them of ripping off Eddie Van Halen's tune. To me it sounds like this version has been influenced by the Van Halen version and is an attempt to out do it. Personally I acknowledge Eddie Van Halen as a trailblazing pioneer on the guitar especially with his development of the rapid fire tapping and pull off techniques in applying them to rock (they had already existed for centuries in Flamenco guitar) but I prefer the guitar playing of Dave Davies which sounds bluesier and more soulful to me. Van Halen and a lot of shredders that have followed him sound too mechanical and non-soulful to me although I admire the difficulty of perfecting their technique.
