I just left an offer of $30 for a 10lb boneless prime rib at my Super Target

I noticed a 10lb prime rib with a $3 off sticker, bringing the price from $67 to $64. Note that they put those same stickers on steaks ranging from $9-$14 bucks. This roast is cryo-packed, so the odds of it having gone bad are remote. The sell by date is Monday; if it's not sold tomorrow, they'll toss it.

It's probably just me, but it.makes.me.nuts seeing that. (Yes, I've posted similar thoughts in the past - sorry!). So I had the stock-guys leave my cel # and an offer of $30. Maybe I'll hear something tomorrow.

BTW, Happy New Year!

1. It is such a shame that food gets trashed when so many are needy.

5. I know the local charities can't take it after the "sell by", but I wonder

if they could take stuff at the "sell by?"

A 10lb prime rib could serve something like 10-15 for dinner if cooked as prime rib. If ground into chili or cooked into soup - it could serve far more.

Even in my freezer, it won't be wasted.

12. Some retail stores freeze it on the sell by date (or the day before) then donate it.

I work for a food bank with large scale freezer capacity. Our trucks make the rounds of the retail stores and pick up that frozen product. We label it with instructions to use immediately once thawed, then distribute.

4. Camembert cheese. I find it after pull date and offer to buy it but they won't let me, toss it

instead. I mean, 1 day old camembert? It's just starting to go good. I offered to take it and throw it in the trash bin for them but they know me too well and said no thanks. It is a liability issue. I offered to sign my life away as pleeeeeeeze it is just getting aged enough but no. Liability.

It makes me nuts seeing that too.

Seriously, the managers should start tweeting when this stuff is going to hit "sell by" and offer it cheap. It's a win-win.

the penicillin mold fuzz stuck out a good 5 inches before being wrapped and put into boxes. Yup, penicillin goes bad overnight, liability!

A brand named cryo-packed chunk of meat would be opened, smelled, then repackaged. Steaks? Stew meat? Lean ground beef?

They didn't just throw them out in the meat case.
