Does anyone else have one? Do you like it?
I didn't think I would like it, but I love it. Trying different coffees, maybe a few new teas.
Suggestions?
edited to add: k-cups are not the only way to use a keurig. though they're nice if you're in a hurry...

I have one of the keurig link and 2 of the ekobrew. My husband ordered two more from a different maker...
Renew Deal
(81,855 posts)The coffee cups are really expensive. Over $1 each at Dunkin Donuts. You can get a much better deal at costco. Also, the k-cups are plastic containers that need to be disposed of, so they are not very environmentally friendly. I'd sell it on E-bay to the highest bidder.
A-Long-Little-Doggie
(1,011 posts)but I can't do it because of the environmental impact of those little cups.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,674 posts)It comes with a filter thing you can use instead of the pre-filled coffee cartridges. You put your own coffee in the refillable cartridge. Works just fine.

(20,043 posts)and it does work well.
Last night I had a lot of company, and pulled out the regular coffee pot.

(20,043 posts)that I can put my own coffee in. The little coffee cups work nicely for a "hurry up" cup.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,674 posts)The best thing is that I can make just ONE cup of coffee (really quickly) and drink it, and not have to waste a whole pot like I often did with my regular coffee maker. And if I want another cup of a different kind of coffee (or tea or hot chocolate) I can make that, really quickly.
You don't have to use their little coffee cartridges, either. Once the ones that came with it are gone I'll use the little filter thingy and grind my own.
This is the best machine ever.
one_voice
(20,043 posts)no waste and I love that.
I always end up throwing away some when I make a pot, using the little cartridge that came with it will save me money.

(8,556 posts)Not of coffee, but of plastic. All of those little cups add up over time.
But still, I do like the thing

(20,043 posts)cartridge that came with it. No need to use the k-cups all the time.

(8,556 posts)I have the Mr. Coffee version that didn't come with a reusable cup. I'll definitely get one now.

(20,043 posts)the ekobrew leaks a little...takes about 2 seconds to wipe. Here's a video review: http://www.amazon.com/ekobrew-Refillable-Keurig-Brewers-1-Count/dp/B0051SU0OW
I have two more reusable cups coming...made by different companies. I don't know which one will be the best...but even a little leaking is better than all the plastic.
When I say little leaking..it really is a little.
its simple
I like recycling. But it does cost energy and resources to make the cups in the first place, as well as to recycle them. Better not to use them at all. Now that I know about the accessories, it won't be a problem.

(29,098 posts)I love that it is easy and convenient
But I think the pods are very over priced and the fill yer own things you can buy are messy.
I also find that the coffee isn't hot enough for my taste even on the hotest setting.
It does brew great tea....I'm loving the green chai and the lemon zinger.

(3,445 posts)I use both the K-cups and the "make your own". The secret with the thing you fill with your own coffee is to pack the coffee in HARD. Get a small spoon or a tamper tool thingy you use for a tobacco pipe, and pack it in. You won't get coffee grounds in your drink.
For me, I love it because no muss, no fuss. I live alone and used to waste a lot of coffee making half a pot and not drinking it all. Now I can have a perfect cup. They are a bit expensive, but the cost evens out. Also, always hot when it finishes--big plus.
My favorite coffee is the Barista Prima Italian Roast--yum!

If you join the Keurig "club" --- info. came with the machine---- the prices on the little cups is much cheaper. That's what they all did.
I don't drink coffee, but the cocoa was good.

(8,556 posts)I do like it a lot. Much better taste so far. I was never very good at measuring the right amount of coffee vs. water. Now it's done for me and I love that.

(2,176 posts)including the basket (cheap but messy) and a new device called, EZ-cup, which comes with paper filters (the best option yet). I wouldn't be without it.

(20,043 posts)good to know they work well!! I use my own coffee too, the reusable basket I use leaks a little, but not nearly enough for me to stop using it. I use the k-cups, usually after dinner for a quick cup...

I've been using my sister's Keurig occasionally, but I get terrible pangs of liberal guilt every time I throw a used k-cup in the trash. I'll be ordering the ez-cup immediately.
ETA: I decided to go with the ekobrew after reading Amazon reviews. I'll share my experience with it when it arrives.

(2,682 posts)She likes it. She is the only one in the house (4 of us) who drinks coffee. She had been brewing a pot in the morning, drinking half a cup before leaving for work, and taking a tall mug with her. After work, she threw away the remains of the pot. The machine has three settings, small cup, medium cup, tall cup (9.25 oz). For her first cup the small is ok but for the mug she takes with her, even the tall cup setting is pretty small. She has figured if she brews a small then a large, she can fill her mug. Oh, and she uses the filter with her own coffee.
I drink tea -- I've got my tea kettle for hot water, my tea pot for brewing and various tea cups for drinking. I won't be using her machine.

(3,539 posts)We have the platinum edition that has a timer. We also have a travel version that holds just enough water for one cup. We take it on trips and use that instead of the hotel coffee maker. We also take our own mugs, creamer and sugar. We order our coffee from Coffee Cow where a box of Donut Shop runs $13.99 for 24 single serve cups.

(8,419 posts)I am the only one who drinks coffe so it works out well. When using the k cup I recommend setting it to 6oz cup, brew, then take out the k cup and turn it 180 degrees, then brew another 6oz and you have a big cup of coffee. My only complaint is the waste, not only the plastic, but the coffee, which is why I use the same k cup twice.
maddezmom
(135,060 posts)and it's cut down on my coffee intake. I normally use the k-cups but because k-cup basket it a bit difficult to use. However, after looking at you link to the ekobrew...I think that would make it much easier to pack my own. Thanks for the link.

(7,237 posts)But I don't like the waste of all the little plastic cups and the refillable pod that came with mine is very messy.
I am going to check out the EZ-Cup with paper filters that someone linked in a previous reply!!! It would be great if I could find a refillable option that worked better for me.
I have been finding the disposable pre-filled cups for about 50 cents each in one of the local grocery stores. (36 cups, I think it is like 9 flavors x 4 cups each, for $17.99). Expensive, but cheaper than the $1.50 I was spending at the convenience store.
I live alone so I was always brewing too much coffee and wasting it.
Since each cup is fresh brewed, it's also really great to have your 3rd cup on a Sunday morning taste as super-fresh as the first!
(The hot apple cider pods are kind of nice, too!)

Here's one that makes 4 cups or less - http://www.amazon.com/Bodum-Chambord-French-Coffee-17-Ounce/dp/B005FFBTOQ/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1325641284&sr=8-3

(68,918 posts)for your coffee needs. They (at least here) carry about 95% of the cups and I use the 20% coupons to make them even cheaper (BBandB is cheaper than they are in the grocery). Our favorites so far are Donut House (all types) and Gloria Jean's Butterscotch and Mudslide.

YMMV
But I don't see the dawn of the Keurig as the end of civilization as we know it. That I'll attribute to the Republican party.
I just see it as another gadget in the consumerist arsenal.

(17,339 posts)As I said, you're the exception to the rule. Which I applaud.
But people go for convenience. They go for the "bright shiny thing."
It takes a lot to sacrifice convenience for the good of all.
I don't like Keurig machines, tea bags, single serve yogurts, ramen pot noodles and non recyclable cans, bottles and milk cartons. And yes, you kids get off of my lawn. Growing up there were glass soda bottles which had a deposit on them, milk bottles that went back to the dairy and far less waste.
