near Sacramento (Northern) California. Many families who had moved here from Mexico traveled back there to visit grandparents, etc.,and stayed longer than two weeks. The schools would lose many per-diem student state payments for the week after New Year's Day weekend, so the school district finally rearranged the schedule to accommodate families traveling far, and who could use more time.
Maybe that's why it's the same where you live?
