it's official

I am old. First time in probably 35 years - nothing to drink, no party, going to bed before midnight on NYE.

Not sure if I am sad or looking forward to a New Years Day without a hangover (I think that is even more sign of old age, sigh)

anyway, Happy New Year to all of my Lounge friends, and especially to the ones who couldn't be here.

I am old, and I had a nice glass of wine with dinner...

I'm no longer feeling it, but it was nice while it lasted!

Happy New Year to you and yours........and yes, to absent friends.

We kissed when the ball dropped in NY, because we won't be awake when the clock strikes midnight here in the west.

Happy New Year to you, Kali.

Now days I just get happy and then go to sleep...and stay that way for about 12 hours.

Not a big deal. Not since it gave a man shyer than any of you suspect a chance at midnight
to show a sweetheart named Linda how he felt without an overwhelming fear of rejection.

Now THAT NYE wasn't arbitrary.

Most NYEs have been just another excuse to get ripped for me. But the past few years have been a little different. Last year I remember reflecting on how far I've come in my life. I had just gotten married, something that I thought would never happen to me, and lent Satan a parka. I reflected on my whole life up to that point...how improbable it all was. Despite having the odds stacked against me I'd made it.

This year, the year after one of the best years of my life, has been the most challenging since I found myself sitting in a jail cell in Atlanta, Georgia, about 14 years ago. I finally had my head screwed on straight, then everything else around me started going crazy. It's been rough.

But I've made it to 2013. The next year. I feel like I can put a lot of that stuff behind me, like I'm moving on. Like it's more than just an arbitrary date. I'm drawing a line in the sand- bad stuff back there, good stuff up here.

One thing that's always haunted me in my life is that I've had the tendency to back down from challenges. One thing I told Jen last year when life started throwing shit at us is that we do not back down from challenges. We're going to move forward and deal with problems.

We have and we're better for it. But let me tell you, I'm ready for the good stuff now.

And I'm only 35. To be fair, I have a crazy week ahead of me and cannot afford to be worn out. I played with doggies at the humane society, and that was it for me and the spousal unit.

No Anderson & Kathy, no Times Square ball drop. Just following the deal and then catching Die Hard 2 on cable.

And no sham-pag-na. After all...

Happy New Year!
